I've just had my renewal through with NFU and it has doubled!! I've never claimed anything with my current horse. My last horse had to be pts so I got her insured value back. I'm guessing that has affected this one although it was a different horse?

So now I need to shop around and find a cheaper quote but was wondering what other insurance companies are good at paying out?

I asked some horsie friends this recently and they recommended KBIS, SEIS or NFU, but i'm not sure how many of them had made a claim.

I used Julie Andrews (Broker) and they found me my policy through SEIS which was cheaper than the quote i got directly! Would recommend the service. :D

I stick with NFU for ours, but I have removed loss of use and death payouts from our insurance so we are just covered for vets and third party - as that is the most important part of the insurance for us. Helped drop the price significantly so maybe worth chatting with them about what is included in your insurance that you perhaps don't need to be paying for?

Im with Carriagehouse have had two claims and the service from them has been excellent, wouldnt change and my premiums have been very good. I can only give a personal opinion but im happy and have been for the last four years.

I ws going to say NFU too, we find them brilliant :) Just one thing do you go through your local office with them. If not, please try, they re much more helpful than the phone service. :)

oh, good tip - our local office are brilliant and will really try and get things just perfect for you so the cover is exactly what you need, they also give a discount if you have more than one insurance with them.

NFU all the way.... My monthly premium went up this yea too but I know too many horror stories as a result of using cheaper insurers....

Getting rid of Death and Loss of use from your policy really brings it down.
Plus when my mare was about to be PTS as she could no longer be used for anything even a companion, they would not pay out for LOU or Death for various silly reasons.
I use Julie Andrews and their service is fab for paying out for vets fee's etc. My understanting is very few companies will pay out for PTS or LOU without a huge fight.
We forefitted the money in the end.

Petplan are fantastic and paid out over £7k in a year for 2 seperate isues. When my renewal came through it had only gone up an extra £60 a year and my horse is 20. They are helpful on the phone and depending on how quick the vet is at sending the paperwork off I have had my cheque within 7days! The only downfall is they tend to be more expensive than most others, but I guess you get what you pay for. My new boy is with KBIS (have not made a claim yet so cannot comment there), but this worked out £160 less than my Petplan quote for more cover

mine are insured with SEIB. it costs £1,400 a year to insure four horses, so that's about £350 per animal a year, or £30 a month.

hope that helps. :)

Have to say Petplan are brilliant for both horses and dogs. Like whats been said before they can be a bit more expensive, but are brilliant to deal with and pay instantly.

My insurance is up for renewal next month and i'm currently with NFU and I will definately be changing. Firstly I am expecting the premium to go up horrendously and also because they now have a bad reputation since they passed their claims handling to equine first. Thankfully I don't have direct experience of this, but my vet now wants payment up front if you are insured with NFU and say they are now on a par with E&l

I think I will be going to KBIS as they offered me a good quote and get glowing reports on here.

I am waiting for NFU to call me back and explain why the premium has gone up so much. Its now over £60 a month just for Cooper who I only insure for vets bills, death and public liability. After losing Tia last year I am reluctant to get rid of the death pay out and vet bills and public liability is a must so there isnt anything I can remove from the policy. Its just far too expensive! I get it from a broker in Stratford anyways.

So far my quotes from the other insurance companies mentioned here are about £45 so not as bad.

I didnt realise NFU's reputation had gone so bad!
