I am looking for something relatively inexpensive that will tow my arena grader and a small roller (3ft) mow the lawn, tow a little trailer for poo picking and pottering around 7 acres. Can anyone recommend a vehicle that they find does all this without burning out? Not really interested in quad bikes as too tempting for light fingered folk and don't have enough money to buy a mini tractor unless you know someone who has one for 300 quid! Thanks

Don't try an MTD 12hp ride on - or anything driven by belt as it's just too much for them on an arena (well def sand and rubber chip) and burns out the belts within minutes!

Thanks very much, do you know what is the minimum HP engine I should look at?

Sorry just re-read the OP and the ride on mower may not be the best for sand school what about an old quad bike?

I messed about with rideon mowers waste of time... never had a quad bike guess you would need to spend upwards of £1000 and yes people do seem to find them before there lost!! I took the plunge and got a Kubota 4x4 tractor its fantastic, was well worth going into debt for it , got a tipping trailer, harrows, roller and a topper mower , but if money is tight you could use an old suzuki jeep or a small site dumper with a tow behind mower that has its own engine to drive the blades.. then you can tow the other implements as required.. hope this helps...

As a YO, we have a ride on mower and cant complain at all about it - we bought a quad bike brand new that we have never used (i cant do the kick start thingi at all!)
we level the indoor arena at least once a week - sometimes twice, we trim down weeds, we cut bits of grass, we tow a tipping trailer. i think its only a 12hp on we have, we are onto or 2nd one in 8 years, but we bought used ones not new. i would say you would easily pick one up for under 300. We were advised they were fab for arena levelling as you can get into the corners better.
i would highly suggest one of these as a cheap option and i imagine you may get a bargin this time of year!

Thanks for the advice, but what is an MTD?! how would i know what is driven by a blet or not? Does a westwood garden tractor run on a belt? sorry completely ignorant when it comes to mechanical things.

i think a MTD is a make like westwood? i think our is or was a MTD, we have also had/got a LawnFlite. (cant remember which is which!)
if i am correct, they are like a Westwood. we honestly havent had any major probs, our belt snapped once but my dad was trying to cut some veryyyyy tall strong weeks down so it was no wonder it snapped.
IMO, if the westwood price is right - go for it

MTD /Lawnflite are the same company (one bought the other out) - our MTD is a 12hp - we have a sand/rubber arena and it makes it about 20ft before burning belt out! Manages to cut field though (takes a long time)

To see if they are belt driven you have to get underneath - there will be like a big black rubber belt from a pulley to the drive pulley of the cutting deck

TBH - I wouldn't trust a Westwood either for arena (indoor is always going to be lighter/drier surface) we've spoken to most ride on manufacturers and the only ones who were confident they would do the job were John Deere.

TBH - we're saving for a compact tractor
