Recommend me a 7.5 tonne box please!

I've currently got an L reg Leyland Daf 150 turbo which is exceptionally reliable and has served me well over the past 9 years but I'm thinking about getting something newer. I need a box that can carry 3 horses legally, probably 03/04, something like that. I need living but for my budget I guess I'll have to go for unfitted living and kit it out myself.

Can anyone recommend a particular make/manufacturer?

for 20k im sure youll get a great box with everything you require! :) my friend just sold hers- albeit a bit older but everything else that you have specified for £4k :)

I would go for a Daf LF!!! my present
lorry is a 03 LF nice to drive , however you will need to be carefull
with who built it, must have a tilt cab as these are very difficult to work on
without and you also need to see the thing on a weighbridge as you need to be sure it weighs in at less than 5500kg if you are hoping to carry 3 mine is just under 5000kg 18ft body 10 ft horse area 8ft living ...
maybe worth looking at a tristar they build nice stick sided lorrys that are super light or kevin parker if you want bells and knobs on it and still a sensible weight...
 
Whatever you buy you will be over the limit with 3 horses and living. If you want it for 3 horses then don't have any living at all. If you are desperate for living then stick to no more than 2 horses and living but make sure that the living is light weight.

Have to agree with the above as have researched this issue at length. Our lorry is lightweight and may match what you are looking for when we sell but even that comes in at 5.8T which with 3 horses and all the gear will make yu overweight.

The only lorry I have seen that manufactures these light enough with living is Kevin Parker but these will be out of your price range.

Can you consider going the full HGV route say with a 10T lorry?

Rubish!!! plenty of 7.5 ton lorrys around the 5 ton unladen mark with full living ie shower toilet fridge etc..
lightest is the equitrec kevin parker a little more but better quality then there is tristar alloy boxes if you dont have a fortune to spend... so 2-2 1/2 tonne payload is 3 normal horses saddles and a well stocked fridge = happy days :D
 
You would be very lucky to find one weighing anywhere near 5 Tons unless it is extremely short. A short chassis/cab will weigh no less than 4 Tons. The body and fittings will weigh at least 1.5 Tons so even 5.5 Tons would be very good weight for a short chassis/cab leaving 2.0 tons payload.

If 3 horses weigh 3/4 of a ton each that would be 2 1/4 tons just for the horses making the vehicle overweight!

If the 3 horses weigh 1/2 ton each then that would be 1 1/2 tons leaving 1/2 tons for passengers, water, feed, rugs etc.

Not rubbish (two "b"s) at all.

Whilst there may well be some very modern, ultra lightweight builds that can take 3 horses (as opposed to ponies or lightweight racehorses) and have comfortable living - they are likely to be considerably over the OPs budget.
As it is, Peter is right - a compromise is needed somewhere. 3 horses and minimal living/stick sided - or coachbuilt with bells and whistles and only 2 horses. Or a bigger budget.

I've got an 03 LF and it's fab to drive. So quiet and smooth. I've had a lot of little niggles with it though and it's not mega high mileage either. I 'think' it weighs in at about 4800kg with 18' Olympic body on the back. It can carry 4 but we've got it set up to carry three right now.

I did have a 2000 DAF 45 previously which was soooooo reliable and also lovely to drive. I do miss the ability to overtake something on the motorway with the newer truck though. The newer ones are limited to 55/56mph and that's a right pain when you're traveling distances on a motorway.

Yep, the limiter is going to be a pain! My old Daf is reliable and I guess I should hang onto it until I can afford to do my HGV and go for a 10 tonner. I usually only carry two big horses in my lorry, although it's stalled for three I'd rather not get caught being over weight. However, I've got three horses that are jumping and I'd like the option to take them all out at once legally!

So, are the vast majority of 7.5 tonne lorries on the road not capable of carrying three horses legally?

It's something like 4800kg so well under the legal limit loaded. It's a stud box though so doesn't have much living, just a day thing with a bunk bed and cooker. Fine for an overnight stop.

Oh yes, I'm sure they are - well, certainly the older ones. I think that many builders are trying to get the whole chassis down to 5.5 now but you would deffo want a trip to a weigh bridge to confirm before handing over any cash. I had an Oakley many years ago that weighed in at 7.2 without a horse on it...! It was meant to be a 7.5t not a 10 tonner ha ha, but that's pretty extreme:eek:

Sorry wrong a daf lf 45 chasis cab that is the right length to take a 18ft body is just over 3000kgs.. I have a weigh bridge ticket for mine with its unconverted 18 ft grp box at 4250kg now as a basic box no luton or skirts just over 5000kg with fuel and me in the cab ...

yes!!! but not all :D like ive said if you want light weight you have 3 choices, pay a lot for a fancy gin palace , have a practical stick sider alloy box or a basic converted box van , best to stick with a 7.5 tonner as you will need to use a tachograph when you go over ...
