I'm hoping to trade my Micra for something that I can tow with and one day sitting my towing test (dad will be designated driver in the mean time as I can't afford to do both!)

I'm looking for something cheap, reliable and economical (isn't everyone)

My ideal budget would be around £5k - I don't want to be spending more than £150 per month in payments.

I only drive about 15 - 20 miles per day so I'm hoping that I won't have to spend a rediculous amount on diesel.

Does the car I want even exist - I'm worried I'm being totally unrealistic!

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I have just bought a Mitsuibishi Pajero (japanese version of Shogun) for Towing and its fab fab fab. Its a 12yr old one but in great condition (most of the ones for sale do seem to be) and they are supposed to be very reliable (unlike discoverys which apparently have a habit of breaking down)
I paid £2300 for mine

edited to say: its not at all eco with the diesel - guzzles it

I am thinking about buying a Kia Sorento which has had good reports on here and you can pick up a 05/06 plate for 6/7k which I think is very good value. Will be interested to see responses though.

I have a shogun, SWB 2.5td, which is the uk version of the pajero. It's fab for towing. Mine is for sale by the way

Edited to say, it's plated to tow 2800kg and it's cheap

Im hoping to trade my micra next year and do my trailer test and buy a shogun or pajero (the short version) or 3 door lol!

My mates got a pajero and its a brill towing machine

Before you choose what car you want, you need to decide what trailer you will towing and know whether it will be loaded with one pony, or two great big heavy WB's.

Only at that point will you know what car you can buy. I have an Isuzu Trooper 3.1TD, this vehicle can tow 3.5 ton braked trailer, which is at the higher end of the towing abilities, some of SUV (play-type) 4x4's can only tow much lighter weights, so you need to do some checking before you make a decision.

ie, some 4x4's can only two 2.2 tons. The Disco's, Range Rovers and Land Rovers, usually have higher towing abilities.

Don't assume all SUV, 4x4's can tow a trailer with two horses in, because they can't. Certainly not legally.

I have a Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8 lwb as well. They tow beautifully & have loads of power but they are fairly heavy on the diesel. They will tow any horse trailer, even if you have a couple of 17h horses in there,They are pretty reliable & the parts are easy enough to get (Milners Off Road) on the internet are one of the best & most reasonably priced places. You can buy them at quite reasonably now. Depending on your age though you may find it expensive to insure, infact many large 4x4 are expensive for younger people to insure.

Thanks Tracey01 - you've raised some good points.

I'd probably be looking at towing an Ifor - I've not quite looked at all the options yet as plan would be to get the car, hire trailers as and when while saving up to buy my own.

My horse is only 15h but a HW cob so say 600kg for him - I would only be looking to tow him TBH - I don't want to have to fork out more money just to tow someone else about lol!

i paid 4k for a M reg Toyota Surf a few months ago. It can tow 2.5tonnes which is all I need. My Ifor 505 weighs about a tonne empty so leaves me 1.5tonnes for 2 horses and I only have a 15.2hh weedy looking excuse for a Welsh Cob (my big, fat Welshie never goes anywhere anymore).

I have a 4.0L Jeep Cherokee which I use to tow a Bateson and two 16h horses. I highly highly recommend getting a car that is converted to run on LPG as it is half the price of petrol and makes towing and general driving much less expensive. The conversion costs about 1200 pounds but I'd look for a second hand car that has already been converted. I paid 1900 pounds for mine, it's a bit ancient at 14 years old but the road tax won't be going up and it runs beautifully and cheaply and looks set to do so for a good few more years.

i have a discovery and you should be really careful about towing with cars and some of the less powerful 4 wheel drives they really aren't made for towing.

Mondeos are great for towing.

The mark 1 can two 1500kg, mark 2 1800kg and the new one 2000kg.

You will really need to go for the mark 2 which should be do able on your budget.

Having changed from a Mondeo to a Warrier (As much as I love the warrier!!!) the fuel bill is a LOT larger!!!!!
