So I'd really like to get a dressage saddle for the boy but problem is we don't have a great range of saddlers in our area when it comes to second hand.

I'm thinking my best bet is probably going to be to buy privately then get it fitted - might be a bit of a risk in going through a few before finding the right one but don't much fancy paying £600+ second hand from the local saddlers and I'm not so worried about saddle age & condition as fit & price.

so can any of you lovely people help recommend makes & models of dressage saddles that could fit the following criteria;

highish withers (but not narrow, he's actually medium wide)
not a lot of curve on the tree
not much shoulder
doesn't have pannels that protrude a long way behind the seat
must be leather

... not much of a shopping list eh? piccie of the spoilt brats back below

currently got cut back pommel with front gussets and a fairly hooped gullet shape as a guide.

thankies ... hmm, little glass of red on the offering for replies?!:o

My most favourite dressage saddle is a ideal Jessica. Just so unbelievably comfy. Unfortunately it doesn't fit either if my weird fitting horses (one super narrow, one super wide). You can get them for a really good price second hand.

I have a gorgeous Morris and Nolan dressage saddle for my mare that is super comfy and just amazing but I don't often see them second hand around.

bates innova!!!!! love them, with the cair air :) unfortunatly i sold mine due to no horse for it, but i got some of my best tests out of it and the horse loved it
i cryed when it went to its new owner thats how much i loved it... i wish id kept it now...and found a horse that fitted it!!!!!!!
we sold it for just over £800 2nd hand...but was in excellent condition
everything is more or less changeable too!

I love ideal jessicas too, sadly though they won't fit (got one sat in the back room!) - or at least not without getting them to do a made to measure :(

... tootles off to look at morris & nolan ...

I love the ideal jessica too but I bought one and it didnt fit either of my horses, I have a really nice fieldhouse dressage saddle, I have just ordered a Lavinia Mitchell dressage for my really wide Arab they are lovely saddles.

Problem with them is that they use the wintec gullet plates which don't seem to suit the boy because of the angle they're at :(

yes new horse of 17.3....with massive shoulders....just tucked inbehind them and made working very uncomfortable! the wintec plate suits a smaller horse where they can sit further down the body - almost over the shoulder...rather than perching ontop and digging in......

i am considering a wintec version for the horse that originaly had the bates, because ive never had a feeling like that saddle gave me!

hmm, I'd wondered about fieldhouse - might take a lookie at one of his stable mates saddles and see what the shape is like!
