Recommend me a Farrier (Cheltenham).

Can anyone recommend me a good farrier in the Cheltenham/Gloucestershire area. I'm getting my pony back off loan (she's in another County) so I need a new farrier.

I'm in the Cheltenham area so any recommendations would be great :).

I have just given a new chap a go. He was advertising in Countrywide in Tredington. He used to work in the Halesowen area and has moved here after living in South Africa for a few years. So far he has done a trim and a set for me and I was happy with what he did. Tel 07766 940787.

Proir to him I was using Graeme Fleet, but he did't seem to be able to come at times that were convenient for me. He does all the youngsters a Tweenhill, a recommendation in itself I feel. Tel. 07747 113852.

Who did you use before your pony went on loan, why not use the same?

I use Cecil Swan and have done for about 10 years. He is brilliant, would 100% recommend him, he sorted my boy out when he had some serious foot problems - we were actually recommended him by Kearns and Rea! His number: 01242 621590
 
Nick Partridge, without a doubt. He sorted out the absolute state Cecil Swan left my horse's feet in. Wouldn't touch Cecil again with a bargepole, just looking at the photos of my horse's feet make me feel sick.
 
I use Jim and he's amazing!...very busy at the moment though. If I had to move I would look at using Richard Looker (but I dont have a number for him), and I'm amazed about Cecil- I only ever really hear good things about him.
 
Cant say i've ever heard of an unhappy Cecil Swan customer before either!! The only issue i have ever had is that he takes on a lot of apprentices and one of them hammered a nail in at the wrong angle and gave my pony a rather sore foot! Was sorted by Cecil with much apologising and free appointments after. It was a bit annoying but the apprentices have to learn somehow and he was corrected before any real damage was done as he was supervised.

I do now request that Cecil sorts my horses himself though as my mare has had some foot problems that we've been working to sort out, and he is quite happy to do that.
 
That's why I won't use someone like Cecil. He is rather expensive and I would not want to pay though the nose to have an apprentice shoe my horse (can't afford to pay through the nose anyway!)

Exactly the same thing happened years ago to someone I know, but Cecil and his trainees had gone before it was noticed.
 
He has always asked permission for his apprentices to shoe my horses :) I tried another (cheaper) farrier a couple of years ago. He mangled my horses feet completely, and then was very abusive when i requested he come back and fix them as she had her grading a couple of days later. Ended up actually doing an official complaint about him he was that bad!! She actually lost marks in her grading for her feet and it was commented about poor farrier work!! So he may have cost me a better premie for my mare! Decided after that that cheaper was definately not better and went straight back to Cecil who has done a wonderful job with sorting her feet out :)

Whats his name? He might be the guy who mangled my horses feet as he was one of Cecils old apprentices lol!!

I guess theres always going to be people who have a good and bad experience of farriers/vets/RIs..

I can supply a whole list of unhappy Cecil customers! He made my horse which normally moves like nobody's business have a short stuff stride and a very sore back from the change in angle.

these photos were taken the day after the last time he was allowed near them! My horse has always had very good feet, and thankfully they are now back on track. He is back to moving properly and far less sore!

James Pilcher... I ADORE HIM! He's made such a difference to my horses. I had used the same farrier for thirteen years, and then found James. He gives you a ring when he's an hour away to let you know exactly when he'll be there, and he's fantastic with the horses. My mare stood like a lamb for the first time ever when James did her, as opposed to needing a chifney and three strong men around! I really can't recommend him enough! PM me for his number!
