My birthday is coming up and I feel it is time to upgrade from my skull cap to hat to keep smart for competing. I have brown boots and a brown/green tweed jacket so I am thinking a brown or green hat. It will be used for the dressage and sj stage so must be compliant with the BE safety regulations. Please help me with my shopping…..

HS1 hands down, you can obviously put whatever colour silk on it you wish and its the safest. Failing that CO Wellington comes in Brown and Hunter Green, or the Showjumper which is similar. Have a look which shape you prefer. I used to event in brown boots and tweed and wore a navy silk on my HS1 so don't eliminate other colours too

I have a Charles Owen Wellington classic for dressage and jumping phase and general dressage and jumping

I absolutely love it as its traditional look but in a modern shape,

For the XC I have Charles Owen pro II in gold which is so comfy and doesn't make my head hot!

I love my HS1 but to be honest the best hat is what fits your head shape properly. I also really liked the Champion hats but they didn't fit my head shape properly!

Go to a really big saddlery and try them all on! I was quite enlightened when I went to Rideaway before Xmas, tried on 20 odd hats and was only let with two that fit properly!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but according to the BE 2012 rulebook

2.3 BE80,BE90, BE100 and BE100 Plus
Protective headwear, black or dark blue in colour

This is for both the dressage and SJ phases.
