Hi all 👋

So the old girl is currently in fat camp after a mild bout of laminitis last week (she is now much better thank god). Going forward, she will be in her pen during the day, and turned out at night time... She is now in need of a muzzle. She is 25, with worn golden oldie front teeth, needs something tough and that can't be easily lost... accidently on purpose of course. And ideally something that is airy and won't be too hot to wear... Am I asking for the world?!

Bonus question... How long should I leave it before turning her out in the field again? Assuming that I would reintroduce her to grass slowly?

Thanks in advance 👍

I think the thinline flexible filly is the kindest on teeth. Expensive, but mine hasn’t got it off yet. The green guard one has ruined her teeth. I attached it to the green guard head collar but you can use any.

i think I read somewhere to keep them in for as long again as they have shown discomfort. So if they were footy for a week, keep them in for another week after they are back to normal. i couldn’t swear to that.

Definitely the Flexible Filly. Mine wears one every day for the past two years. Expensive but worth every penny. It takes some faffing to get it to fit so that they can only eat through the hole.
It came out top in a recent survey of grazing muzzles.

The Ultimate Muzzle, I found that my horse couldn't eat through a green guard and the thinline rubbed terribly

Ultimate Muzzle was far cheaper and easier to use and keep on (and no rubs) than the others, I'm always surprised that they aren't recommended more often.

I’ve just spent £75 On a thin line and it’s rubbed so badly just in one day. She has almost a burn on her chin poor horse. Bit of a kick in the teeth after spending that much

I'm sorry to hear that, I had exactly the same experience with it, rubbed the most out of any that I tried, even after being adjusted several times.

Ultimate Muzzle is only about £30 from memory, and as long as it's as loose as the instructions suggest, then no rubbing (only saw minor rubs when yard staff did it up too tight a few times).

I have one using Flexible filly successfully (Greenguard was a disaster, rubbed and he ate round the side of it anyway). The other fatty is in a Shires cheap and cheerful, having learned within minutes how to eat round the sides of the Flexible Filly however tightly it was attached. So far so good with the Shires.
