With sweet itch season on the way I'm on the lookout for a new rug as my mare ripped the bum off hers by the end of last summer! Any recommendations for a decent - but cheap - rug?

If anyone's selling a 5'9 one then I may be interested :)

The most effective one I have used is the Rambo sweet itch hoody but sadly it's not cheap but IMO its well worth the money

Rambo Sweet itch hoody for my princess. Worth every penny for doing the job and durability. I tried the Boett and the elastic bit around the top of the legs rubbed her hair away. But she is very special. :D

Alfie trashed his last yr - bum end also, from the bottom right up to the seam. It's like a patchwork quilt now!.

I bought a belly cover off ebay for £15 and used the fabric to patch his old one. I hate spending silly money on SI rugs!

Personally I prefer the snuggy hoods one, boetts are good too but I wouldnt touch the cheaper ones.

Invest in a decent one and just get stitching!

I always used Sweet itch hoodies with my sweet itchers, and have nothing bad to say. They aren't cheap, but you can often get them on ebay for slightly less.. I would also suggest having a spare one for wet weather if you can, so one is drying out while the other is in use. Ours have lasted an average of three or four seasons, making them really.

I use a Premier Equine rug on my Fell. They are a reasonable price anyway but can quite often be picked up cheaper in their sale! Boetts and Snuggy Hoods are all very well but I found them a faff putting on and off over my pony's head (not that she was bothered!!). I think the biggest thing with any SI rug is to get it on early - mine usually has hers on by the end of Feb.

We have 5 in SI rugs during midge season. The fist time I had to put one on I almost cried:rolleyes:

With practice it becomes very easy :)

I have a Rambo sweet itch hoody for my Shetland, the rug is brilliant and has withstood rather a lot of abuse from the little blighter! ;)
Would definitely recommend them and even though they're not the cheapest to buy initially you get what you pay for and in my opinion are fantastic value for money.

My lad wreaked a boett within days where as a Rambo hoody has done him well.

My local shop has Rambo hoodys at 25% of next month. :) I will be getting another.

Equitheme are good but you do need the next size up as come up small. They are half the price of some others I have tried and work as well and last as long as those.

Another rambo sweet itch hoodie fan here, mine is ready for its fifth season...fit well, do the job and seem pretty tough. Everything prior to purchasing this one had been destroyed after one summer..

Boett. My shett has had 2, bought in 2006, just replaced them this week ready for this season. Once you get used to them, they are as quick and easy as any other rug.

Is it worth electrifying fences to prevent the rugs getting ripped. This will be my first year with one with SI. We are not in a midge area and on a hill with a constant breeze, no trees or standing water, so hoping he won't be affected

I used a Boett for a few years and got fed up with putting it on and off. Pony didn't like it going over his head as it was a bit of a tug. He also ripped it regularly.

Used a Rambo Hoody last year and was impressed. Much tougher and a lot cheaper and do just as good a job.

I second the Rambo sweet itch hoody. Plus get hold of some stuff called 'summer freedom' comes in a tub, smells divine and does a remarkable job, you'll
Be blown away with the results.

I've never had a SI hoody ripped through itching, but a lot of people on here say electrify. Hopefully your situation will help a lot, but the main thing is to get the rug on early - ours used to start itching end of Feb and needed rugs from then til end of Oct..

Thanks. He came with a SI rug but apparently it doesn't fit very well (it was made to measure). I will try it on and decide if I need to try and alter it or get another.

My fences all have an elec top wire but since he is about 28" he isn't going to actually reach the top wire :o

The Rambo rugs aren't too bad for ripping so it would depend how bad your pony wasbut Boett/snuggyhoods ones Yes, do electrify. We have everything electrified because otherwise they manage to find something to rip their rugs on.
