Can anyone recommend an alternative to thermatex please?

I'm looking for a cooler/ stable rug.

Also do you know if I would need to buy a size smaller in that make. I understand thermatex usually recommend a size smaller than your normal rug size.

Thanks for any advice!!
Smarties all round!

Weatherbeeta do make a thermatex look alike at a fraction of the price. But I have to confess that mine split at the buckles after being worn twice. I love weatherbeeta which does my ned brilliantly - but this was not up to thier usual quality. As I no longer had the receipt (having bought it in the summer at a horse show) they would not replace it.

I posted on here and found the same thing had happened to one or two others - although other posters had found them brilliant.

I was looking for a thermatex but they were so expensive. I have since bought a Weatherbeeta Thermo Cell Cooler and think it's brill. I checked that the thermatex was a wool blend and saw that the weatherbeeta was too, though not quite the same percentage. Despite that it perform really well and wicks away the moisture which settles on the surface. Horse warm and dry underneath and the rug dries off in the tackroom overnight. Great value - I think mine was about £45 - a Thermatex is £100+.

I like Lansdowne as it is Thermatex type material but has cupped shoulders and doesn't slide back behind the wither. The buckles are also a little more secure.

You can also try the Colin Cook Thermalux but I find it heavier than Thermatex.

I've just bought a Premier Equine PremTex Cooler which I am really pleased with - excellent customer service and quality. Again, they also advise buying a size smaller as the nature of the material means that it will stretch.

keep your eyes open ;) I picked up a second hand Thermatex in great condition for £15. it is a 7ft so drowns Fleur but still does the job beautifully.

Also picked up a thermatex sweat sheet (ideal in summer) for £20 on the thermatex stall a few years ago at Olympia. There are often some real bargins on their stand at shows colours may not be great but I have been lucky and the show rugs are almost always 6ft-6ft6 to fit the display horses ;) , I nearly bought a horse walker one this year at badminton for £35!! (normally £146)

Would loooove a real life thermatex..... I drool over my friends as it is loverly! I've been looking on ebay in the hope I might find a second hand one, but no luck so far. I've even thought about buying cheap doggy thermatex rugs second hand and sewing them together!! But I need a 6'3"/ 6'6" so it might take some time.

Think hubby might hit the roof if I spend £100+ on ANOTHER rug...he just doesn't understand.......... (I don't have that many honest!)

But I am a bit skint since christmas. I do normally try to buy wisely as cheaper options aren't always cheaper in the long run if they dont last, but neddy has grown LOADS in the last 5 months (5 YO) and I'm running out of rugs now! And I've just had to get a completely new saddle after just 6 months......my shopping list seems to be endless......

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into those! Although I'm sure I can hear a thermatex rug saying "buy me".........

Can't beat a thermatex always abit cheaper at the shows and will last you years saying that I picked up a masta lookalike at a robinsons sale and it looks smart and does the job but I would say it fits slighty narrow on the shoulder

I have 2 WB Thermo-cell combos, my horse is in a 6ft 9 turnout but I bought 6ft 6 in these and they fit him (LW Show Cob, so chunky!) perfectly. I have had the first one for nearly 4 years I think.
No stretching, sagging, and dry him off a treat. £45ish each, bargain! I had a Thermatex but found it heavy, and it went out of shape terribly also used to clamp back on his withers so I'd be scared to leave it on for any period of time.

I've got a Mark Todd Coolex with neck, I've had it about 3 years now and I'm still really pleased with it.

It wicks away sweat very quickly and it dries my fairly hairy native within a couple of hours if I bath him. I also use it for travelling.

I bought my normal rug size. It doesn't appear as heavy or stretch like I've seen some Thermatex do though the ones I've seen have been old ones.

The only thing I would say is if you are intending to use it as a stable rug I would buy the ones that have some sorting of coating to stop bedding sticking to it..

I personally wouldn't buy another thermatex. For similar money you can buy a Lansdown, far superior in cut and quality.

If you don't have that budget, Mark Todd coolex might be worth looking at.

another vote for the weatherbeeta!
both my neddies wear one in there own particular colour and have worn well with the first one lasting 3 years so far.
My previous horse had a thermatex and it was a lot heavier and the buckles weren't as good.

I have a Colin Cook thermalux, tatty and old. I have just invested in a Weatherbeeta Thermo-Cell. Being clipped, the thermocell slips back quite a bit in a velcro type action and I've resorted to doing the front buckles at their tightest. I think once the clip has grown out to more than just stubble it will be fine. It is very smart and I got it at a bargain price of £42 inc postage. It's only about half the weight of the thermalux, which is good for warmer days of course but the thermalux is still getting plenty of use with the cold snaps we're having.

Love love love the Mark Todd Coolex rugs. I have one which I ahve had for over 3yrs now. It still looks very smart, and does the job beautifully. 100% recommend them!
