I currently have an 03 Shogun that is costing me a small fortune to run. I have decided to sell it and get myself a little run around and an older 4x4 to tow the trailer. I am only looking to spend about 1.5k, which I know won't buy me much, but would like some suggestions for older type 4x4's, please?

You'd be better off sticking to the shogun, I had one although it was old but got stolen then bought a cheap landrover discovery, cost me more to fix it than it was worth - never again!

I agree with the discovery, bag of ****! Mine was very expensive. Had defenders, OK but need someone who can do a bit of mechanicing as they are prone to breaking tho not as pricey as disco. My bestest 4x4 by a long long way was a 3.1 isuzu trooper (not the newer 3l engine as they blow up)! had it 6 years and it spent more time towing than not. never ailed anything. towed like a dream and really robust. I really really regret letting it go. I got a wagon so wanted a little run about car but sooooo wish I had my trooper back!

My Shogun got stolen too! I reckon they are really easy to steal

The Shogun is going! Although its fab for towing it has cost me an absolute fortune in repairs and seems to love the garage and likes to visit every month! I want a 4x4 in a lower insurance group, so will try and avoid the Shogun's and Disco's.

I will have a look at the Trooper and the Frontera. Elsie what size engine has your Frontera got?

Daihatsu Fourtrak! I am sure you can get them quite cheaply now. Had mine for many years and it's brilliant on road and off, plus a very good tower. The engine is 2.8 TDi so doesn't cost the Earth in fuel either. Touch wood has never cost much in repairs either..

I had a disco & it was fab - never broke down in 4 years & towed fab but I've also been looking again & agree the isuzu's have a good reputation. When they were first brought out a policeman I spoke to said his force used them & really rated them.

Before the disco I had a LWB landrover hard top for 10+ years & I'm really sorry I ever sold it as it was the absolute BEST tow vehicle & very reliable on the whole.

Unfortunately there are "rogue" cars in every group - if you get a bad one then there's nothing you can do except dump it asap.

Dogstar I was just looking at insurance groups and the Fourtrak is by far the lowest.

Carys, just looking at Isuzu's and you can pick them up really cheaply. I know what you mean about the "rogue" cars. Unfortunately I always seem to end up with one!

Get an old 300tdi series disco ..... Its towed brilliantly, infact towed a 2006 navara out of the field as it was stuck, The discovery which is a 97 never even tracked the field

Its been very reliable, it was my only vehicle and I wanted something a little newer, Brother in law now has it and it has never given him any bother at all, The only thing with an older disco is that back end/boot area does rust quite badly, but if you know a good welder then just keep him in mind

I now have td5 disco and it hasnt given much bother apart from a broken hardy spicer, I think that may have been my fault though

We tow 1x16hh horse in a Hyundai Santa Fe 2L. I wouldn't tow more than that or charge all over the UK, but it's cheap in most respects for a 4x4 - we need it to be a non-towing vehicle too, and it does both jobs well in Cornwall's hills/lanes.
Sis is more serious, competing nationally and uses the the Hyundai Terracan - says the only problem she's ever had with it is forgetting that the trailer with 2x17hh++ is even on the back... Again, inexpensive for the job it does, although you won't buy one for its looks!

You should pick up a fourtrack for that money get an L reg > as has better suspension and get a model with the manual 4x4 not the button on the dash.

you could prob get a Surf for your budget. They're Toyotas so normally very reliable. Unfortunately I found one of the few 3.0L models with a dodgy cylinder head so it's been expensive this year. Insurance - not sure what group but costs me about £39 a month.
