Hi

Starting shopping for this coming winter and I need to know whats the best warmest rug out there. Only got our pony in February and used the rugs he came with so haven't shopped for them before. He lived in at his last home but I'm hoping to keep him out this coming winter, so what woud you recommend?

I recommend Premier Equine Buster Trio. It has a 100g outer liner that you can use on it's own when it's slightly warmer, then 3 liners in 100g, 200g and 300g (I think). Plus 2 neck covers, 1 in 100g and 1 in 200g. So basically you have a rug for all temperatures!
Shame it is a pony you have, as I have one to sell in a 6'9 as it was a tad small for my horse. He wore it for a couple of weeks before I decided to buy the 7' version.
Initial outlay is quite steep, but as it is so many rugs in one, it kind of works out very reasonable.

I bought a Weatherbeeta Tristar Rug last autumn for my 2 year old filly, who lives out. Mine was £112 from Millbry Hill (or thereabouts).

My filly is still growing (into 6'9 ATM ) so not wanting to invest too much in a rug that she'll outgrow (and being used to Fal's and Rambo Supreme rugs) I actually bought two identical Tristars at the same time, assuming (sorry about this Weatherbeeta!) that the rugs mightn't be all that great by comparison. Let's just say, after one long winter, one of my brand new rugs is STILL in its bag - totally un-required!

I found the Tristar excellent. It has a zip off neck cover and has a layering system, so can be used autumn, winter and spring. Mine was totally water-proof and fitted well. It's light to handle, didn't rub, rip anywhere, and no strap-stitching came unpicked. Everything's still in excellent condition for ready for next winter following almost 24/7 use last winter. I'd definitely be happy to recommend these rugs.

My only small gripe: I wish the outer shell didn't have 100g fill so I could use the outer rug as a summer turnout!

Someone on eBay is selling a 5'9" one ATM I see....

Weatherbeeta Tristar - fantastic rug. Had mine 2 or 3 years now (whenever they were new out) and its been wonderful. Its got the detachable liner which can be thrown in a regular washing machine. Its never leaked / rubbed / moved etc. and kept my TB x warm all winter.

I notice Spyda says her Tristar neck is zip-off, mine is velcro - weird?

Duh, you're quite right, it is velcro! Must have been thinking of my zip-on Rambo Supreme's neck cover - mind you, the mud gets stuck in the zipper on that one and is a right pain to undo. Zips and winter mud don't mix very well!

What size are you looking for? :)

I have a 6' rambo plus for sale (the pretty red & silver one), which is one of the best and warmest rugs going, IMO, but my horse has outgrown it :(

The horsewear Rambo rugs are the best by far in my opinion, for quality and fit, but they are expensive. Mine has the Rambo Plus rug for winter, and he comes out of winter with out any bald rubbed patches at all, which you'll find you will get with some of the other brands.

If you're not looking to spend so much, I think the best value rugs in my opinion are now weatherbeeta. Their quality seems to be improving all the time and they are much cheaper than Rambo.

I have to agree with CeeBee about the Premier Equine rugs! They are fab! I bought the heaviest one about 4 years ago, and its still being used now, i love them :) They are quite a large fit (i think) as the 6'6 fits my 17.2 TB nicely, and keeps him nice and toasty too :D

Also, all the other things you can buy from PE (boots, numnahs etc..) are awesome too! :)
