As title says really, am trying to keep costs down so wondered if anyone could recommend some cheap shavings if I get them by the pallet, will need the place to deliver to swindon though.

As far as I'm aware there are no really cheap shavings, except possibly from a local wood yard & they would not be dust extracted. I buy shavings by the pallet, there are 42 bales on a pallet & it works out at about £6.85 per bale delivered. It's a saving over buying single bales but not a great amount. To my supplier a pallet every 3 months is not bulk buying, if I had a pallet a week then that would be more like bulk buying in their eyes.

Have you looked into using wood pellets? I have just converted from shavings to them (I use Verdo horse bedding), and they have massively reduced mucking out time and cost (mine are just over £4 for a 15kg bag including delivery for a pallet of 60 bags). Now I would never go back to shavings!

I go to my local wood yard, they sell dust extracted decent sized bales for about £6.50, shavings and chip combined for £5.50 or big bags of loosely packed shavings not dust extracted for £3.50 aprox. The latter is good for chucking on top of boggy areas at gateways in wet weather. Not sure where you are in the Midlands, this place is near Northampton

I do buy from a local timber yard. The shavings are not dust extracted. In the winter this is ok, I think it is because the shavings are freshly made so the wood is not dust dry, my horse is stabled and wees in the stable, and the atmosphere is damp. In the summer when my horse is out they dry up and my stable gets very dusty so I clear the lot out and put down a small summer bed of dust extracted shavings, but have saved a lot of money over the winter.

Go on Bassett equine supplies in Swindon. £6.50 per bale and delivery for free :-)
Or toomers on stone lane west Swindon have shavings for £8. Something a bale for snowflake but bales a bit bigger or they have flax on offer for £6.12 a bale.

I can get as much sawdust as I want from my local saw mill for free. I haven't used it for a horse yet but the local horse charity do and have no problems. It's not dust extracted but because it's freshly cut it doesn't go dusty. Have to make sure they don't cut treated wood or use nails tho as years ago knew a horse who got a 6 inch nail in his foot from a saw mill where they manufacturered things too
