I've finally broken up for my 7-week summer holiday, and I'd really really love to take my horse to a good beach that I can have a good gallop on, splash at waves and wade in the sea! But, living in southern oxfordshire, there are no beaches near us and I really can't do a reconnaisance (if that's how it's spelt..) trip first to suss places out. We'd be trailering down so close parking and good access is important. So please can people point me in the right direction to some good beaches, or contacts I can ask for more infomation?

Sorry if this subject has been done to the death! :(

Thank you, will look into that! So far I've found a possible place, there are some beaches near Burnham-on-sea (I know you can't actually ride on that beach), I think called Bean and Berrow or something? They look possible and hopefully not tooo far away! xx

Not heard of Bean and Berrow to be honest. Another nice beach is West Wittering but there are time restrictions on most beaches this time of the year.

Holkham, Norfolk is about 1/2 hr from me. Its amazing!! ABout £8 to park up for day, plenty of space in car park. Very well set up for riders. Some local stables/b and bs offer good facilities too.

highcliff beach south near barton on sea

supposed to be before 9am and after 5pm though we didnt we went along 10.30 paid for the amount of spaces the truck filled then went along far away from any humans and didnt bother anyone

I looked into it and think norfolk is going to be about 4hrs away! Even if we did stay the night it would be quite a big thing to do and also may get a bit expensive... thanks for the suggestions, getting as many possible places as I can!

Anyone else? xx

Holkham is half hour from me also. There is an excellent B & B and camping facilities at Whitehall Farm, Burnham Thorpe, which caters for horses, and is a nice ride to the beach along tracks with about 50ft of road work.

The beach is fantastic, the Household Cavalry go there withtheir horses for holidays, they were there last week!

Well, did a little more research into Brean (sorry, not bean!) beach, was all looking quite positive until I found this:

What really worries me is the second one, "We'd not walked the horses out very far when the beach just sank underneath them." I don't think it's worth risking, I don't know that area very well and quite frankly these stories are scaring me!

Struggling to find other places that would be suitable for a day visit... a mini break is coming back into the equation!!

We live 1 mile from the beach and very rarely use it for rideing. Apart from the dog walkers that allow their dogs to chase you, there are the ones that appear from behind the sand dunes and spook the horses, then there are the seals, you never know quite what they will do, especially if they have pups with them. Then there is the beach itself, I would always ask advise locally about tides ect, and never ride on patches of wet sand that have dry sand between them and the sea, they can be unstable and cause horses to sink. I know I sound like a party pooper but beach rideing should be approached with care.

It's a shame that you live so close but yet really don't find it as great as someone like me imagines. I can see there is a lot to take into account for a successful, fun, trip- don't worry about sounding like a party pooper, it all needs thinking about. I think we're possibly veering towards a one night stay, as a family, with my horse, at an establishment with B+B, stables and good beach riding facilities. I'm hoping that this way it'll all be taken care of, and it will make it into a fun outing, rather than driving hours on end to a beach only to be chased by dogs and protective seals!! :p

Looking at south wales now... a little closer for us than norfolk!
