So every year I go to the XC day at Burghley and Blenheim, but this year it falls over the 2 weekends i'm on holiday.

I'm going to XC day at Chatsworth in May (which i've not been to before) but can anyone else recommend me a good day out at the XC?

I live in Nottingham so something around a 50 mile radius. I'm not fussy about the calibre of the event, I just like a good day out, a picnic and to watch some exciting XC.

Thanks all

It's Belton weekend after next - in Lincs about 40 mins from Nottingham - lots of the big names use it as a warm up for Badminton so a really good event to watch

Withington horse trials (near Cheltenham, Glos - M5 J11a) is lovely. Though used by many top riders, it is small and low-key but friendly and you are practically rubbing shoulders with your 'heros'. Beautiful scenery as well.

I haven't been to Gatcome but have been told by those in the know that it is another really nice one to visit. (March and August each year)

Bit far for you but in case anyone else is interested and is a bit closer, Glanusk is lovely. They have a country fair there at the same so lots to do for the whole family, lots of nice stalls, a very friendly atmosphere and a cross country course where you can see quite a lot of it from one spot (at the top of the slope above the water).

ETA - Because they have lots of classes there (from BE90 to 1*) over 4 days there's plenty of XC to watch too!

Oops, just looked at Glanusk's website and they're not running it this year - working on the ground to make it better for next year and all their other events (Green Man Festival being the best known). One for 2014 though!

Rockingham should be quite good. I went to Brigstock (the one it replaces) and it was a nice event

Bramham is not too far from you, just up the A1 a bit, and a nice big event. There is a lot of BS and good level showing going on too on the non-XC days, so lots to do, and good shopping.

I was going to suggest Chatsworth, I think it is the best event to watch the xc at.

Gatcombe is pretty good too, the shopping is a but bigger than Chatsworth.

I love bramham its close to where i live which is handy stunning country park fun corss country course lots of trade stalls good food and its in june and usually the weather is fantastic for walking and watching the cross country i take my dad for a day out lol and he enjoys it too

Another vote for Belton. They have greatly improved it for spectators over the last couple of years with arena events as well as the main event.
