Am doing an Amazon order right now, and wondered if there were any really good ones I should get! I have the Pony Club Manual and the BHS Manual of Equitation but thats it really, apart from my pony books :o

There are the Tim Stockdale DVD's on jumping - I know you said books but:D.....most of the books I have are Classical dressage - if you are interested put in Sylvia Loch The Perfect Seat is a good read whatever sort of riding you do. Inevitably once you put in one you get loads of suggestions to look through - my wish list is full of stuff!!:D

When I was your age I used to read 'the Horsemasters Notebook' by Mary Rose cover to cover for years - I still have my orginal copy !

The other one that I still have and still use for reference is 'Thinking Riding' By Mollie Sivewright - although this maybe a little heavy reading but never the less an excellent book to have !

More modern one are 'Down to Earth Dressage' By Carl Hester - good photo's

Zara Philips , Mary King is a very good read and so is William Fox Pitt all very motivational !

The Horses Mind by Michael Peace..... great book, explains how the horse sees the world, certainly gives you an understanding as to why horses do what they do... :)

All of the Kelly Marks Perfect Series are excellent and very accessible;

Try Perfect Partners, Perfect Confidence, Perfect Manners

Amazon normally do them as a special offer for all 3

The one I use at the moment is (I think) a DK one by William Micklem, can't remember the title but it is a sort of complete guide to riding and stable management that goes to a decent level. I asked for it a while ago because I wanted something more modern and more advanced that the ones I had when I was a kid, it goes as far as describing the aids for travers and half pass etc whereas the ones I had when I was younger tended to just do the paces, steering stopping and jumping.

When I was learning the usbourne guide to horse riding was my bible. It was a good simple beginners book.

I had lots of horse books actually and they all had different good bits. It is worth having a few. I also had some really old ones that were interesting, lots of them were given to me by a friend of the family and were from the early seventies and featured famous riders I'd never heard of.

One which I love was illustrated with pencil drawings (it is called something like "the manual of horsemanship) and refers to your groom hacking your second horse to meet you on the hunt, and how to choose a good groom etc. It assumes that the horses are kept at home, stabled and cared for by your full time groom. Not very useful but lovely to look at!

I enjoyed "riding through my life" by HRH Princess Anne too, it is a biography but it goes right from her first ride on a tiny pony through her days at pony club, to competing and out the other side, she's done alls orts including racing, and has done interesting things through her position as a royal such as RDA and visiting the spanish riding school. Interestingly it end with her talking about her children starting riding and hoping that horses will be as much of a pleasure to them as they are to her! It is full of lovely pictures too, photos of her and Charles with their mother on their ponies and things, and some nice anecdotes too, just make sure you have lots of hankies ready for the bit where doublet is PTS!!!

i've just got:

Themed Lesson Plans - useful from all sorts of angles :)

Poles and Gridwork - just need some more jumps now at the yard :D

101 Jumping Exercises for Horse and Rider :D

For my Birthday, I got:

The Nature of Horses: their Evolution, Intelligence and Behaviour - quite heavy going, but interesting :D

I got another one as well, but can't find it...

I used to read the BHS book cover to cover :D

I'm having a massive clear out at home. And would be happy for you to have any of the horse books I'm getting rid of - free, or make a donation to a the WHW or something.

I'll get a list together TG and let you know what I have.

I agree.

I found them easy to read. Perfect Confidence has some good techniques in it to help improve confidence generally, not only when on or around horses!

Perfect Manners is the first in the series and has some good foundation exercises for you and your horse to follow. Which can really help improve/strengthen the relationship between horse and owner and make the horse more accepting when being asked to do something.

Writing styles are a personal thing and I found that I could take in and remember things from Kelly Marks 'Perfect' series of books.

Linda Kohanov - The Tao of Equus. All about why humans love horses so much, why women are particularly drawn in, and how horses may be the best therapists on the planet. A little bit spiritual for my tastes at times, but really smile-inducing and thought provoking 80)
