My WB cross doesn't look all that broad to me but I'm fed up with all the rugs I buy her being too tight across the chest; they end up gaping at the front as I have to buckle them on one of the last holes (and as for the ones with the single-fit front fasteners - well, they just rub like hell.)
She's a 6'6 and I've tried going up a size but then the rugs are too long and don't sit right on her across the back and sit too far back on her wither.

So what rugs do any of you with large widish horses find offer the best fit???

Thanks!

I have a Rambo Duo. The best fitting rug I have ever owned, doesn't slip or rub and has never leaked.

Pricey but worth every penny.

Mark todd ones have a too generous a front for my WB - if you can get hold of one Axiom rugs are bloody brilliant - tricky to get hold of though :)

Rambo, Rhino, and Shires suit my 'doesn't look wide but is a bus' mare! Masta, derby house, weatherbeta are a waste of time - they are either far too tight around her chest or too high up so they rub the base of her neck, or they just look like mini skirts.
Have got some bargains from http://www.barnstormers.co.uk/ Am really impressed with the Shires ones she has, just wish i hadn't worked my way through other makes first!

My "old fashioned' warmblood has big shoulders and plenty of chest.

Horseware ie rambo, rhino is too tight. I haven't tried their xl range.

I usually buy him Mark Todd or Fal (now on sale again). I've had mixed success with Shires. They fit at the front, but had one that rubbed him on the top of his hindquarters.

Bucas or premier equine for mine.

Both seem to "puff" out to give room around the shoulder area, but tight enough round the neck to not fall backwards and pull on the wither (which I find masta do).

My idxwb is very chunky at the front and horsewarerugs wouldn't stand a chance! I'd recommend fal, shires, bridleway and even some weatherbeetas fit him well with the shoulder darts.

I'm really suprised people are saying rambos. Do you mean the rambo xl as I'v never tried them but have been tempted as I love horseware rugs? I can't even get the front around my boy on the standard rambos, although they fit my tb a dream!

I have a fairly chunky welsh cob and horseware are a great fit he has supreme's, duo's and the xl they all fit fab. I tried a fal but it was awful, think this is when the company changed hands and ebay had a few cheap one's at £80ish I sent them back! x

Another vote for the Axiom. I bought mine new off Ebay a couple of years ago for £16 plus £12 postage. I bought it as a "spare" but have used it as my main rug as it's proved so good. Best rug I've ever had. Fitted my chunky RID mare perfectly. Having said that it's a 6'9" abd noticed she's grown a bit since last winter so will probably be up into a 7'. Can't find a 7' Axiom which is a real shame.

My boy must be XXXL chunky then as I literally can't get the standard amigos/rambos around his chest! Does anyone know if the xl range is much bigger? I do love the horseware range, my tb has 20 of their rugs! I know crazy and was thinking about ordering an xl in for the beast! Sorry for hijacking post OP!

No! I agree with you about the Rambo, Rhino and Amigos, they're too tight for mine too; infact, any of the rugs with single fix front fastenings (like the Bucas) are simply too tight.

I'm wandering towards the Mark Todd TO's with the quick-clip front fastenings with buckle, but am still a bit reluctant to commit as a friend of mine had several of these rugs a few years ago and moaned endlessly that they weren't waterproof and then took ages to dry when they were soaked through. Eeeek don't need that, thanks

Ideally, I'd like to try an Amigo XL but just wish they're weren't quite so expensive and the rug and neck cover came together for a reasonable price. Cheeses me off to buy a rug for £70 and then have to spend £40+ buying a separate neck cover. Flipping rip off for just a neck section!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Is this one of the Axiom rugs a few have mentioned liking http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AXIOM-1800D-BALLISTIC-NAVY-300gm-TURNOUT-COMBO-RUG-6-6-/370500796600

Have a Rambo XL for my large ID which is great. The only other rugs that fit him well are Weetherbeetas (eg. Landa Freestyle/orican) or the JHL/Mark Todd style rugs with large shoulder darts. I have found the PE brilliant for depth but not so good for him over his withers. The amigos - the cross surcingles do not even meet on him and the depth is poor!

Been trying to find a 7ft WB Tristar rug (but discontinued :()for him this winter as I need a high denier outer (ideally 1600) to stop his playmate tearing holes in his rugs over his quarters which limits what rugs are possible.

May give the xl a go then at some point. I'v got a wb tristar in 7ft! How ironic although he does use it, otherwise I'd give to you! It's a really good fit and the necks perfect size wise! They discontinued because they supposedly leak, although mine never has and I'v had it 2 years now. Hope you find one, if I do will let you know! It's very tough also as he's a huge rug ripper and has held up very well, better than the rambos (which he rips on my tb!).

I'm pleased I'm not alone! I thought I had a shire in disguise! I had a look at the mark todd rugs but just didn't like the look of them. Weatherbeeta fit mine really well, so long as you get the ones that are darted. The ones that aren't darted aren't big enough and fit my tb nicely!!

Hi Spyda. :)

Personally, I find that the Horseware rugs (Rhino, Rambo etc) fit TB types best. For my WB x ISH I like Weatherbeeta or Axiom rugs (she also wears a 6'6") as I find that these fit her nicely across the chest, don't rub and are all good quality - they seem to last and appear well made.

Obviously I buy the Axiom rugs off ebay, as I think that's the only place you can get them, but I also bought my last Weatherbeetas off of ebay too and got them much cheaper than I could find elsewhere (via Prequestrian on ebay).

I have one like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AXIOM-120...t=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item19c8ac9466

There is also this one (not the most attractive colour but really warm and really tough!):
