Ok so may be a tiny bit excited...... I believe I have just been given permission to have a dog at my rented property- not official just yet, but as good as.

Is a decent sized house, with big secure garden.

I leave for work at 7.30, and get home at 4.30
OH leaves between 9 and 10, goes home for lunch between 12 and 2, and is often there for the afternoon as well.

the plan would be for the dog to be walked by my OH in the morning ~30 mins, get let out or trip round the block when he gets home at lunch time, then ~1hr walk by me in the evening.... or trip to the yard. Long walks at weekends (this is what snot face, who is currently staying with me is getting.... she is a JRT)

Do not think i have the time for a pup, and would like a rescue(1-4 years old?????)

Need a dog to be sociable as where it would be mainly walked is a haven for dog walkers.

The OH wants a Ridgeback..... I think they are a bit too big- and do not know much about the breed to be honest. I would love a springer, but worry that i would not provide it with enough stimulation- staffy maybe???

SOOOOooo what breeds would you knowledgeable lot recommend for the life style detailed above??

Springer! Our lot are left for several hours max and get walked daily. As long as you don't get an ex-working dog used to hours of exercise, there's no reason you can't get one. I'm a bit biased (see my albums) but they are no bother apart from the whole walking on the lead issue, still ongoing.

They're very snuggly and quite happy to be upside down and asleep all evening.

I love Ridgebacks but socialisation in the early early times is crucial with them. Rescues may have missed this period. They are beautiful dogs and loyal to the end but I have known some not so nice ones too :(

The ridgys I have known have actually been quite lazy dogs! Kizzy (our old girl) had to be dragged on walks and would then sleep all day, mums new pup Molly with run around like a hooligan for half an hour then sleep for hours and hours. She does need alot of mental stimulation though, or she will destroy anything she comes into contact with.

it wont be a greyhound..... lots of woods where i live and if it took off after something could end up on a road

Interesting about ridgies......

think it will end up being a mongrel

Gorgeous springers!!!

What is RR rescue- rescue remedies???

I think puppies need someone at home most of the time so suggest a lovely rescue. You could get almost any breed. Most of pedigree dogs have a breed rescue, just google for the details. Rescue kennels around here are filled to the brim with Staffies and lurchers, both lovely dogs in the rght hands.

Since you asked so nicely there's no need to wander off ;)

Oh Lex, there are some beautiful dogs out there in UK rescue. I am close to Manytears and they have some utterly gorgeous dogs there - I agree with CC, pick a day - go to the rescue and see who you fall in love with or alternatively, please peruse
www.manytears.co.uk.

I have a lovely Springer x you can have, free, for nothing, gratis, nil, nada- get the feeling I want rid? Very hyper, comes from working stock. As thick as 2 short planks but gentle and loving, killer of cushions and sofas but she is still quite a baby. However Elizabeth my daughter may not approve of my giving her away.

Just a work of caution, if you are in rented accommodation are you liable to move? When we relocated up here we had our JR and had the devil's own time find accommodation that accepted dogs. We live in Cumbria, in the country so very dog friendly generally. What it would be like in the city I can't imagine.

Get a JR. They are small, fun, long lived and, if treated properly, nice dogs. Must not be spoilt though. Their diet is the plainest food and they are a very healthy breed, ours is 14 and has only been to the vets for his vacs. Cheap to insure as well.

Good luck with what ever you get.

Yeah have thought about that. It is next to impossible to find landlords that will take pets..... but hoping to stay here for the forseeable and have dog friendly in laws to move in with if the worst comes to the worst.

I also think it is easier to say "yes we will take the house now, with increaed rent/deposit, but we do have one well behaved dog" than..... "can we get one perleseeeeeeeeees!
