Recommendation for a facemask for horse about to have eye op

Late here but when I looked at this recently I decided the Guardian one would be a great choice.
It’s was feared my horse had the same issue as OP luckily it turned out to be a badly blocked tear duct .
Op I hope everything goes well with dealing with this I would be really interested to hear how it all goes if you have time .

Sadly mine is def melanoma - it’s been there some time but has recently become a lot bigger so decision was made to remove it. The good news is that slight it is now starting to cover the edge of her eye, it isnt attached to any eye structures, just skin around it. It can be “lifted” clear of the eye.

Will let you know how we get on - op is week after next!

I had one similar to this supplied by the RBC when my horse was hospitalised with an eye injury. They charged about £60 but it was about 4 years ago.

This was the one but sourced in the UK

Good luck when the day comes.

So a very quick update! Operation is actually this coming Thurs, not Monday - I got the day wrong so I wont be updating about how it goes until then...

On the mask front, I realised my other pony needed a new face mask as his is in holes, so though I'll try the HH one off Amazon. For £26 it was worth a gamble, if it does fit mare having the op, it will prob fit our New Forest so would be used, and possibly save me £30! It arrived and I have to say its really good. It fits her, sits right away from her face and given she's a funny size being a big BRP (so think Part Bred Arab) I often struggle to find masks to fit as she is too fine for cob but too big for pony. But cob actually fitted her perfectly. I am trialling it for a few days to see if remains lifted off her face and so far so good. It seems well made and she seems to really like the fact the mask is off her face. Will check with the vet, and prepared to buy the vet version but I think this could actually work just as well. And for a fraction of the cost.

Only issue now is the HH one we bought possibly wont fit my big forester - he does have rather large ears.... 😆

good luck. Is this standing sedation at home or hospital?

Standing sedation at home. Vet was happy that our setup was suitable and she’s not been travelled for about 5 years after we stopped competing her. She is a stressy mare away from home so it is just better to do it at home.
much nicer for the mare. I had one suspected sarcoid (turned out not to be thanks Dr K) removed from the eye lid and one eye removed on a different horse both done at home. I hope it goes well for you.

So op has been cancelled. Vets advised due to heat and risk of high infection, it would be better to wait a couple of weeks - which is fair enough. We can’t risk and infection in this area - the last melanoma she had removed got an infection (was a large incision and a difficult removal) so I am happy to sit it out till the weathers cooler. The face HH mask is working really well - so thanks to those who recommended it! Will return and update once the ops been done 😊

FYI - now open information

Really useful and interesting - thanks! I have to say I am really impressed with the Harrison Howard facemask - it keeps the mask well away from my mares eye and is an excellent fit. Interesting that light coloured masks are better, I have always bought dark masks because I thought they would be easier to see through - it didn’t occur to me they are hotter to wear. I was pleased to see there was little difference between the HH mask and Equivizor. We are still waiting for the operation - been cancelled twice due to flies and heat because of infection risk. Worst year for flies here!

OPERATION UPDATE!

Our lovely mare finally had her op on Monday (after flies and heat saw it postponed several times), and the offending melanoma was successfully removed. Luckily it was only attached to a bit of her eyelid, and had not damaged any surrounding structures. I was surprised how hard it was, it must have been uncomfortable for her. It was about the size of a 50p and about 5mm thick, there was more than we could see on the outside and no wonder her eye was an odd shape over the last few months. Optivet did a beautiful job and she looks amazing. Only issue was later in the evening she got a touch of mild colic (she is a stressy pony and I was prepared…) but that resolved with pain medication. Today the eye looks pretty normal and she’s back out with her friend.

The Harrison Howard Maskology supreme fly mask has been fantastic; bought two so wash one every day. They stay well away from her eyelid and there’s been no rubbing. So I can confirm, for eye surgeries these masks are really effective. Our mare is a PBA and she in a medium/cob if anyone else needs one.

Thank you everyone who commented and advised re masks! 😊🐴
