Hi all, happy new year - query as in title. I would like to know more about the mix in my boy’s breeding, but would have to do this through a DNA test as no record of breeding came with him. I have looked at one or two companies, but was just a bit sceptical as both asked for photos - thus making me wonder if they were genuine or were just making a judgement based on the photos and saying they had carried out the DNA test. No idea how the results are presented so may be totally wrong here. But hoping someone can recommend a reliable company that has perhaps been used successfully by breeders or whatever? TIA.

I've got a thread somewhere on here. I sent photos which didn't give a clue as to either of my mare's breeding and the results were in line with what I know.

If you do a search for DNA tests you should find it I think.

@SEL are you referring to the company Animal Genetics? If so, I note that their site states that their DNA test does not determine breed which is what I was looking for. Another company I see mentioned in your DNA threads is Equiseq but I think that is a discussion about the validity of their PSSM testing?

None of the breed DNA tests are accurate, they give a guess based on what they've got in their database (which is limited). Horses are all the same species so the differentiation between breeds is too small.

This is also an issue in human heritage tests, when they say 34% Scottish (for example) they actually say it matches 34% of the dna from people living in Scotland in the database. This is why the number changes and people get annoyed.

If there is a query with a NF's breeding then we have to have a sample from the sire, dam and progeny to confirm. I've not heard of how to determine breed of an animal via DNA from just one animal. Many breeds will have mixed ancestory. I have spent my hours tracing my ponies bloodlines, they have included welsh, highland and TB. Good luck with your quest.

@SEL I have found the correct thread now thanks. I can see that you were pretty convinced with one of yours (Appy x Brabant) but that others, including two posters working in the genetics field, are way less certain. There is no urgent reason for me to know exact breeding details of my draft gelding (not my old boy in the icon), but I am just really interested. Is there not accurate DnA testing that breeders would need to use? By the way, I would love to have a cross of my Appy mare from years ago with my current draft - that would be a personality and a half! Thanks everyone else who is commenting!
