We have an exceptional youngster. She needs someone to start her education who is a proven professional but would prefer a few recommendations so I am asking, not only on the forum but also other contacts, etc. She would be either pure SJ or a 3 day eventer.

My other question is, we would like to give a rider the ride on her. To take her up through the ranks etc. How do you go about doing this?! This is complete and utter unknown territory for me. So hence it is very important that we get it right. How does one approach this and what would be in it for each party? Costs? We are aware that the proper contracts will be put into place via our solicitor and so forth.

Thanks x

I've never been in this situation myself but I'm an SJ groom so I suppose I see the other side. I know that my boss has had people contact him, usually via email, who have seen him ride at shows or have had him recommended through word of mouth, and the discussion usually goes from there. He will only take the horse long term if he knows it has genuine potential, but he will take less talented horses for shorter periods to get them going for their owner. I couldn't tell you about costs, as that is something you'd have to discuss with the rider. Basically the horses come to us and are 100% produced by my boss and looked after by us (the staff). All rugs, tack etc is provided by us and my boss competes regularly from training shows to international competitions. If you find a good rider, who you trust, it is an excellent pathway for a talented young horse.

I can think of one name that I would highly recommend, both as an excellent horseman and also because I have first hand experience of their yard and know how well the horses are looked after.

What about Rosie Chinery - a super up and coming event rider :)

You are basically wanting a competition livery - so there will be your basic weekly fee, last time I sent a horse away it was £150 a week. Extras on top were, shoes, worming, Vet visits, competition entries and fuel and registrations relating to these.

Second one to recommend Rosie! Not sure where you are as that would make a big difference, however you will need to budget about £1k a month when all your costs are cleared once competing . Just be a little careful as you are new to this a lot in the horse world is still done on trust rightly or wrongly if you go jumping in with solicitors and agreements for everything bar the kitchen sink most pros will probably politely decline your horse.
Also realise what you think may be a world beater is not in other peoples eyes!

Thank you for recommending Rosie popsdosh and LJR :) I'm sure she'd be only too happy to discuss the idea and answer any questions JBS so here is a link to her website http://rosiechinery.com/. Contact details etc are all on there.
I doubt you'll want to contact her immediately but just to let you know she's out doing dressage today on 4 of the horses so won't have much time to chat :).

Why don't you also chat to ihatework?

She's know of a very good rider who events, but is based in Gloucestershire but not sure if that's too far from you
