About to buy a 3.5 ton horsebox, has anyone got any advice on insurance companies. I'm particularly interested in recovery breakdown, as it can be quite remote here in Devon!

I insure with KBIS, but do my breakdown separately with the Organisation of Horsebox and Trailer Owners as I heard a lot of horror stories about the breakdown services you can buy with your insurance (not necessarily KBIS) and decided I'd rather not take the chance.

I think my insurance is reasonable, I pay just over £200 a year with any driver over 25, fully comp. the breakdown is another £140 odd so still doesn't work out a fortune.

Enjoy your lorry, I can't imagine being without mine now :-)

I have mine with SEIB - I have just had the renewal for £280 per annum, whihc includes unlimited mileage and break down cover. I have had my van insured with them for 5 yrs and the premium has not gone up much at all.

I used to have mine with Anthony Evans, who again include breakdown, but had to have limited mileage of no more than 5000 miles to get the cheapest deal, and was worried I might go over that, hence changing.

Shearwater, simply because they are one of the very few companies that will actually send fresh transport for your horse should you breakdown. They use equine rescue to pick up the horse. Most of the other companies hitch your Horseboxes up and tow it with the horse in.... Which according to vosa... They're not meant to do. It cost me about £340 for fully comp plus the breakdown cover.

Another vote for Shearwater, I have used them for years. Just got my renewal quote for £200, phoned NFU to see if they could better it and their quote was £416 for the same cover!!
I also have my beakdown with Shearwater too and always had excellent prompt service.

KBIS - they have dedicated horse transporters should you need to be picked up if lorry not repairable at roadside.

I avoid Antony Evans as they do not have separate transport, they use a company which will tow your box or try to put it on a low-loader. (Checked again this year and still the same when pressed for an answer)

Just remember, the breakdown companies do not usually (some do, but do check with your insurance co when getting quotes as the AA/BRS do not, as do several others.) come out if you have had an accident, so carry credit card, info of local transporters, or rely on police to assist. You then get re-imbursed by your insurance co after, but you need to call them from the accident.

Happy shopping :)

Shearwater - they use Equine Rescue Services for breakdown who have an excellent reputation. I found Shearwater very professional when I phoned up for a quote and they put up with my endless stream of questions! They're not the cheapest though, but I am of the mind that you get what you pay for....
