Recommendations for a decent insurance company

i just had a quote from petplan, for standard type insurance that includes vets fees (but not loss of use) it was £70!! the horse is a 14.2hh gypsie cob with no issues or treatment!
others KBIS etc were less but still on the expensive side (£40-£50) and one (I think KBIS want a current vetting as I want £5k vets fees (not masses and pretty standard vets fee cover I'd say)
then I see what some of you are paying and wonder why my quote is so much.
I'm currently with Stoneways for 3 of them, £140pm for them altogether. I though that was because I maxed out £5k on one of them last year (MRI scan etc etc) but the quotes I've been looking for are just so I can get an idea so I've only put my 7yo gypsie cob through the quotes.
what can I be doing wrong?

I am with NFU and have had quite a few claims the last one a big one for treatment for broken splint bone.

NFU were excellant and even paid some of the alternative husbandary cost of being on box rest as well as all the vet bills. Vet bills were paid directly to vet as well. However I am not sure if they are taking on new customers for horse insurance.

I would also say insure for the higher limit with vet bills as 3K does not go that far now, I insure up to 5k. The bill I had went over 3,000 as I had vet out every 10 days for 12 weeks, 2 sets of xrays and also they paid £500 towards cost of box rest.

I agree, the other horse stabled with mine is with NFU. The loan horse we had before her was and had alot of problems with 1 leg, ended up at teh vet for over 3 weeks before being put to sleep. bill was £8k!! NFU paid nearly £7k as it was 2 conditions that caused it (the policy was £5k per condition rather than overall). they also paid 1/2 the livery fees which not all do.
although it has recently increased in price, the new mare we have is with them (insured in December 2012 so Im prety sure they are still taking new customers) its about £40 a month (less than petplan and better cover limits than mine who are with stoneways-though I must say stoneways paid out no problems when I needed them too)

I'm having a nightmare being paid out by Petplan.

Sadly lost my youngster in November, they still haven't settled my claim. I have now resorted to phoning them daily. I was told on Thursday my cheque has finally been printed and I should receive it by Friday, phoned them today as my cheque hasn't turned up and they have told me it takes them 10 days to post it once printed....???!!! I'm just waiting for customer complaints to call me back (again) to explain why. Needless to say I won't be renewing with them.

My horse is insured with KBIS and they are brilliant!

I have always used NFU before, but they have changed recently and peed me off over something, so I left.

My horse had huge claim last year (suspensory both hinds and had operation) and KBIS were fantastic. Interestingly when my horse went to Liphook for his operation they informed me I would have to pay up front for his operation then claim it back myself from insurance Company - unless I had their permission before for them to claim direct. Now, when they asked me who he was insured through I said KBIS and they automatically said it was approved and I didn't need to pay myself. I then chatted to them about KBIS and they said that NFU are not quick payers anymore......and for NFU clients they will NOT do this!!!!!!

I was really pleased with KBIS, they were great. Everytime I forwarded a vets bill I received a payment receipt within a few days! it was very impressive. They also agreed to everything over the phone and even called me to ask how my horse was after his operation.

KBIS customer service is fantastic.

Forgot to say costs, I pay £53 per month I think it is and he is insured at 4k!

I have severely under insured him though as insurance is so expensive as you can see. But at least he is insured so I am happy I can get the appropriate treatment if needed :)
