Hi all,
After the recent goings on with Fred, I've put him on Global Herbs Supercalm. I've noticed some changes for the better quite quickly, for instance he is much calmer when being tied to be groomed etc. rather than pushing his luck and having to be told firmly to stand still. I also hacked him alone for only the second time ever the other day, whilst he was spooky he didn't explode and being as it was only my second time ever solo (god bless racing yards!) I think we did ok.
The only problem is because it is the powder version he is now reluctant to eat all of his feed (it neither looks nor smells nice now, can't blame him!) For those who wish to know the reason I'm feeding it.....I'd like to use a calmer to get us over this initial training period, he is now being schooled properly (by my YO or with the YO teaching and me onboard) three times a week and I am riding him three times also, so it would be great if he was a little calmer and able to concentrate on his new job rather than being a little too full of himself.
He seems to be finding his feet now and in some ways I'd say he is worse than when I rode him everyday in his racing yard. It could be that he is simply not doing enough work which we've tried to address by working him 6 days a week, starting last wednesday.
He could also be overfed but he is on Pure Easy and has two feeds a day, one scoop each feed. He was on High Fibre Haylage and I have since tried to wean him onto hay.....but he has turned his nose up at this and started digging up his straw bed to find bits of barley (?) or whatever it is he is eating in there!! Last night I had to put half haylage/half hay incase he dug through to the concrete again in his search for munchies and fingers crossed this will have worked! He now has a full large haynet with small holes every night. He is turned out from around 9am to 6pm daily and the grass is good. I'm going to see how his weight holds up on the Pure Easy in his new working regime.
So.....do you have any recommendations for a non-powder calmer that has been known to work on TB's?
