So I have found myself looking for a new 4x4 to tow with. I previously had a Nissan xtrail 2.2 (2002) and found it pretty gutless as soon as we met a hill.

What older vehicles have people towed with that have done well? I will be driving it daily so don't want a 4 litre jeep(!) as will need to run it as an everyday vehicle.

I will only be towing a TB in a Ifor Williams 505 so will need to tow 1600kg comfortably.

Thanks in advance.

Land cruisers are amazing but again never up for sale.

I’m 100% team freelander! They are super.
Cheaper than a land cruiser and they seem to run forever. You can pick the older ones up for about £3k If that’s any good. Ours is a 2007 and going strong and we plan to get another when (if) this gives up.

Edited to add...
2000kg - manual
1750kg - auto

I have an 06 Kia sorrento. Pulls up to 2.8ton. I tow a 505 with one 15hh horse so hardly know they are there. Not the cheapest to run but not the worst.

I have a 2004 Rexton which can tow 3.5 tonnes. It's been pretty reliable and they are very cheap to buy! I know rust can be an issue but there are lots of good ones out there with low mileage.

On a tight budget if you want something that can tow a decent amount I would look at a pick up. You get more for your money and the tax/insurance is cheaper than an equivalent 4x4.

Avoid older nissan navaras the D20 had engine problems and the D40 had chassis problems but an L200 or Isuzu would do a grand job or a toyota hilux if your budget is a bit bigger. The hilux is the vehicle top gear couldn't destroy!

We have an Isuzu D-Max and love it.
