Hi everyone! I wondered if any of you would be able to recommend me a topping for a hardstanding area. It is for a 20x20 area. The guy who did my arena came out to have a look at it but as he is more of a general builder than a horseman he wasn't sure what would be suitable for the top few inches after the rubble has gone in. I had one put in years ago at another place but I can't for the life of me remember what the stuff was called that we put on top. I thought it was dolomite. It was an off white powdery stone combination. Google searches bring up something called Mot. Have you any suggestions? Mud mats won't work as the drainage here is terrible, thanks

Yes, MOT type 1 is what we have used. It’s basically crushed stone and is usually a pinkish colour. You need a good footings of rubbble, preferably with some drains, then a thick layer of type 1, properly rolled flat. Eventually it settles into a pretty solid base.

Make sure it is new and not recycled as the recycled stuff may have metal in it.

Road planings/scalpings which are scraped off before major road resurfacing work very well and are used by lots of farmers.

This is what we used at first to make my yard area. Works well, it was in fact better than my concrete now as it allows water to get away. Now it just sits there in a very irritating small lake
