So my renewal came through from NFU today and it has gone up from just over £300 to over £500 Haven't claimed and nothing has changed as far as I can tell so I am looking for alternatives.

The insurance included their breakdown cover so I am especially interested making sure that any alternative I look at offers really comprehensive roadside assistance if I break down with horses in the back.

Any feedback good or bad appreciated.

Thanks - I'll look at those two.

Has anyone had to use the breakdown service in either case?

While I do want to get my premium down to a reasonable amount, it's not the only factor.

We go through Shearwater for the horsebox, inexpensive and includes breakdown. I don't insure anything with NFU now; their premiums seem to be picked out from the joke shop.

My 3.5ton lorry is through shearwater, and they arranged the breakdown , I have had to use the breakdown when at 5 am in feb, going to Gloucester area to collect a horse, the battery failed, they were there at the yard in 40 mins. Got me going.

I use KBIS - but touch wood - have not had to make a claim, insurance companies show their true colours when we need to claim from them..........

I had been with Anthony Evans for several years - made an accidental damage claim and it was dealt with smoothly and without fuss and premiums very reasonable - woudl recommend. I also got my breakdown through them too.

This year moved to Shearwater for both insuranace and breakdown - the only reason being that the breakdown was better with Shearwater (although a little more expensive) as they use equine specialist recouvery companies who would provide alternative transport for the horses etc. AE would tow your horsebox with the horses in it. As my lorry is really long in the tooth now I decided to beef up my breakdown cover.

Don't think you could go wrong with either one of these companies.

I recommend Shearwater, I always get different quotes each year but stick with them as they are the cheapest and their breakdown is so reliable. I'm averaging at least 2 call outs for punctures a year and they always come promptly.

Good feedback about the breakdown cover as that's one aspect that's really important.

Shearwater are looking the favourite at the moment as they have given me a really competitive quote.
