My horse has recently had a small corneal ulcer which has taken over 6 weeks to heal. Even though it was small he ended up having an SPL fitted as it didn't heal at all with drops. My vets have said he seems to have a very poor healing rate. After the SPL was removed his eyelid/ face wasn't healing as expected either. He has been tested for Cushings and it was negative. I don't have the money to pay for extensive tests to try to see if there is another cause for his poor healing.

He has always had runny eyes and sometimes a very runny nose. The vets know about this but don't have any answers. He is also always cold, despite being a native type. My elderly TBx is always much warmer than him and needs less rugs in the winter.

Has anyone used a supplement to help with the immune system, particularly runny eyes and nose? I've had a look on websites but there is a lot to choose from so recommendations would be really helpful.

Putting horses on a daily dose of oily herbs (a mix of dried oregano, rosemary and thyme) is recommended for aiding a healthy diverse hind gut biome, and many of us have additionally found unexpected beneficial knock on effects. They do seem to benefit general health and immunity.

My two Cushing’s horses skin health has improved and they’ve barely had a foot abscess between them since being put on the oily herbs 4 years ago. The sarcoids on my other mare coincidentally became much less angry after she went on oily herbs due to vet diagnosed hind gut issues.

So for a low cost immunity boost which is very unlikely to do any harm I do recommend oily herbs.

Good luck.

I found that the Forage Plus hoof and skin health balancer helped one of mine with runny eyes. It also helped a friend's horse with similar problems.

Oily herbs for sure. My yard stopped feeding it and he started breaking out in sarcoids. I couldn't figure it out for a few months until I realized it had been ages since I had topped up his herbs....I was NOT impressed! Since he's been back on them he had gained significant weight, is swinging through his back again, and his coat is looking better (he also has had a feed change), and sarcoids have stopped popping up.

Mine has had runny eyes every summer and always thought it was allergies but since doing a major feed change at my addition expense (also a 😡😤🤬🤬) and no longer being on anything with molasses or alfalfa, his eyes haven't been runny. I will say oily herbs did nothing for runny eyes but definitely does something for the immune system!!

Ive been using immune aid and oily herbs on my mare who last year had really bad hives, this year hardly any.

Sorry when you say "oily herbs" is this something you make up yourselves?
It’s basically Rosemary , thyme and oregano .
This forum has been a great source of info on this . You can buy 1kg bags online and mix them yourself . Pounds cheaper than buying it from equine feed shops
