Thanks for all your replies to my post yesterday

I honestly wasn't on a fishing trip for compliments for the lad - I am genuinely interested if people think his weight is right or not (but i always like to hear people think he's handsome! :))
On the back of that can anyone make any recommendations for joint supplements for the big guy now he's finished growing? (I hope hes finished growing!!)
Do people with heavier horses rate supplements for our bigger lads and lasses?
Comments on a postcard please!!

I'd be interested about the replies for this too, I'm not sure if you saw my reply on your previous but my shire x is very similar in build to your lad. It worries me that all the strain of carrying that bulk is going to do damage although he does have legs like tree trunks.

I've just started him on dodson+horrell mobility herbs, mainly because I used them with affect on my last horse and also I feel they do more than glucosamine etc xx

I like the equine america Glucosamine Plus. Its only about £15 a tub which lasts over a month and is clearly very popular as the shelves are always empty at my local feed store!

as I'm only feeding it for 'maintenance' its hard to tell whether it works or not..

I read on another forum of people using turmeric as a joint supplement.

As well as joints, it supposedly can help fight cancers, as it's said to do in humans. I thought that was an interesting one, I haven't tried it but would look into it! Apparently Tesco have bags of the powder? I've only ever looked for it in jars but it's the same stuff you'd cook with.

I think people were giving a scoop of 25mg though I could be wrong. Maybe someone else knows more than I do though!

There are a couple of shire producers local to me so have nicked one of their tricks and I feed linseed lozenges to my ID.

For the first time in a lot of years im not feeding any joint supplements. I have never seen any great differances when using them so decided to try without & there is no differance in my horses ways of going.

Im just not conviced by these supplements anymore.

I guess my worry is whilst Hovis is young, pretty fit, in good shape (I think(!!) but see photos on my other post to make your view) he is still doing something that he wasn't built to do.

I know a horse (he's sadly dead now) of a similar build who was crippled by the time he was in his early teens due to being jumped too much / ridden on too hard a ground etc.
Now i also know (through personal experience with Sid) that something awful could happen tomorrow but I'd like to try to protect his joints if i can.
The issue not being for today, not even tomorrow but the years down the line that i hope to have with him. (Unless i kill him first!!)

Does that make sense?

I have recently started using suppleaze gold, has come up on threads before I think as being similar to riaflex as actually has the optimum doses and I think that is what JanetGeorge uses on her IDs (though might be worth checking with her on that one!)

Frank has been noticeably better on it (he is 18 now)
