My mare is so nervous of the clippers that she broke the leadrope when I so much as showed them to her - unplugged and completely harmless as they were

I'm trying to de-sensitise her to them, but looks like it's going to take a while. In the meantime I reckon I'll have more luck with quiet battery ones, so any recommendations?

I'd take a page from Kelly Marks book and start by buying an electric toothbrush! She then spent some time getting the horse to be happy being rubbed anywhere on its body by the switched off toothbrush. Then she turned it on and they did some more slow work to get the horse used to just the sound of it being near her. Then KM held the toothbrush (on) and rubbed the horse with the back of her hand so it could feel the vibration. They hit a bit of a problem at that point but resolved it by playing loud music that covered the sound of the motor. When the horse was totally happy with that, both sides, they moved to a Liveryman Harmony which is a battery powered clipper - the battery clips to your belt. I've got one and it's great. I got mine not because my horse was frightened of clippers but because I am pants at clipping! A friend of mine at the yard borrowed them to clip her clipper phobic mare and the mare was so cool about them that the friend has now bought her own set. Good luck!!!

I have liveryman harmony clippers, they are very quiet. My boy had to be twitched for the first 3 years I had him, and I bought the liveryman and he was great with them. I did a full clip all by myslef, without a twitch. A few months with these and now we are onto to heavy duty main powered clippers!

I highly recommend the liveryman harmony clippers!!! Good luck

Thanks - I'd heard about the electric toothbrush, we do have an old one upstairs so I'll try that. Though I now have the vet coming to look at my other horse tomorrow, so might just get a sedation while he is hear to get her clip done for this winter. Then I can work on getting her used to them all summer.

Looks like Liveryman Harmony is the way to go then

I have some Liveryman Flares that I used to desensitise my girl, I can now clip her jaw with the 'big clippers' which I couldn't before.
