A friend and I are planning on putting our mares in foal next year and are looking for recommendations for stallions to think about.

I'd like to breed a nice all-rounder.
My mare is about 15hh and I'd like a touch more height and slightly finer. She's 33% Arab, out of a cob x ID mare, she's fairly middleweight. Always been sound, nice elastic paces, never had any health issues. Gets quite feathery legs which I HATE, a hangover from her heavyweight cob grandad! Temperament wise she's quite busy, forward thinking and loves to work, has tonnes of stamina which I like. Quite spooky as a youngster but has improved with age! She had a surprise foal as a 4 year old before I bought her.

So what to look for? Any recommendations and advice gratefully received!

I would add more arab blood. :) No brainer really! LOL!

Possibly something like Zayin Zachillies (has raced and competed endurance) or Persiflage (anglo-arab eventer) would be a good starting point to look at to get a feel for what catches your eye and might compliment your mare. Of course some show Arabs have produced stock (and/or have gone on themselves to other careers) that perform very successfully but my favourites are not very tall, so wouldn't add height.

As she has arab blood, do you know her SCID, LFS and CA status? It would be worth testing her so you know if she carries any of those.

Here's one that's too short, but what a cracker he is (posted for fun). http://www.ahs-premium.org.uk/Mukhtar.htm

Have you really assessed her weak and strong points conformation wise? Are there any areas that the stallion needs to be strong?

Icefyre who stands at Groomsbridge Stud might suit your mare. Sally used to be on here but not sure if she still is, can’t remember her user name either. There was an Anglo Arab that I really liked but I can’t for the life of me remember his name. I would also have suggested Mooky until you said you wanted to add height.

Kambarbay’s also available if you like the Teke idea, though he's quite a bit more expensive.

I once saw a lovely overheight Connie that could suit, but can’t remember the name, just that I was ogling him for an hour!

What kind of temperament would you be looking for?

Temperament wise, the same without the slightly neurotic bit!!!

I don't know if he's standing at stud to the public currently, but for a good, level headed and trainable temperament I cannot recommend Calimeer enough. He is my grey's sire and she is completely wonderful.
