Looking for Instructor to rider wireless communication set ? Have looked at Soundfields but wondered if there were any good cheaper options, only need it to work between one rider and an instructor.
Daughter is taught outside and after the wind today I really felt sorry for her instructor trying to be heard above the wind and the rider going 'Eh ? What ?

I used to use a walkie-talkie in lessons. My instructor had a headset with a boom mic and her unit was set to auto transmit. I rode with just ear pieces and auto transmit disabled. It sort of worked, but my instructor had to remember that the first 2 seconds were clipped.

You can pick up inexpensive walkie-talkies that work on the PMR446 band quite easily. I got some Baofeng UV5Rs a while ago, and reprogrammed them to use PMR446 channels and also the river and canal channels.

You can program the power level for each channel. For short distances, to extend how long the radio runs on one charge, drop the power to 2 watts; for longer distances, you can program the same frequency on a second channel at 4 watts.

Rhe supplied documentation is typically bad, translated from Chinese, toilet-paper quality. Luckily, there's a big enthusiast community to provide help.

There are several different variants, and other manufacturers that make better quality, more reliable or more robust, models. Baofeng is cheap enough and works well enough to try out. But be aware that if you get bitten by the ham radio bug, it can get as expensive as horse riding.
