Hi does anyone have a Jeep Cherokee, I am currently looking for another 4x4 and I like the look of the jeep cherokee, can anyone tell me what they are like ? are they good towing vehicles ? its a 2002 LTD model I have seen ?
Thanks

I'm on my third jeep - a Grand Jerokee 2.5 Turbo Diesel......and I won't be buying another one. The first we had for a 4 litre diesel that had a fault the garage couldn't find so they exchanged it for a diesel one, which I'm convinced was built on a Friday afternoon because it had so many things go wrong with it! We exchanged it for the Grand (probably thinking third time lucky) and although we've now had this one for seven years, it did have to have a replacement engine put in it three years ago because of an engine fault! My attitude now is I'm keeping it until it falls apart - which won't be long now as it's now developed an oil leak in the back axle which I'm reliably informed by the garage is terminal! Our 7.5 tonne horse lorry is far more econonical on diesel than the jeep ever was towing the trailer and is also cheaper to tax! May be we've just been unlucky........

I've got a 4 litre petrol/LPG Jeep and I like it a lot. It's up to weight and will tow 3 tonnes comfortably, although mine had a heavy duty towbar and extra back suspension so it tows very nicely. I seriously recommend getting LPG conversion though - it's about half the price of petrol and you get a road tax reduction. Plus anything with a 4 litre engine just guzzles fuel...

ive got a 4 litre petrol grand jeep cherokee, i tow a 16 hh ID x TB and a 13.3hh welsh and you wouldnt know the trailer or them were there. it is a guzzler and costs the same in fuel as my 7.5 ton lorry. mine is a P reg and i bought it after asking for recommendations on here. very happy with it so far.

I often have to jump in my mate's Jerokee jeep to park / turn it and am appalled at the lack of guts, just have to really wellie it to get it moving. A pal also bought one (don't know which model) but took it back after one afternoon of trying to tow with it as it couldn't manage - and they got their money back. I wouldn't buy one. I've a new Freelander 2 and it's been fab - economical and easy whether 2 ponies or horses on board, but haven't tried long journeys with hit. My previous Freelander TD4 was good too, and in fact I'd recommend anyone buying one, as long as it was the TD4 version, as you can get great low mileage ones at good prices now the new model is out. Just avoid the petrol engine - and I was told this by a Land Rover mechanic so perhaps that counts for something?! Having said all this, it depends on what you tow - I'm only talking about an Ifor Williams 505 with ponies on board (I think the towing limit from Landrover is 2000kg) or horses for an occasional short journey - you'd probably have to have a greater towing capacity for horses. Check out the specifics on the manufacturer's websites.

After 8 years of Jeep I switched to a Disco. Would not go within a 100 miles of a Jeep again as they are so unreliable and gutless. Towards the end I switched from a Jeep main dealer to a specialist 4x4 independent for servicing. They reckoned Jeeps were the worst of the mainstrean 4x4s for reliability.

Hmmn. Mine made me very sick indeed. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee TDi 2.7 or whatever, a 53 model, although its done over 100,000 miles. I use it occasionally to tow 1 16.1hh horse in a IW 505 which it does excellently - it is very good at towing. However so too is my Mercedes saloon.

Off road it is superb, but far better than I ever have the need of.

BUT its fuel economy is awful. Combined is about 23mpg and its just prohibitively expensive.

AND it broke. It had a fuel injection problem which caused juddering, the juddering caused the exhaust to break, just where the heater drew in the air above the exhaust. I got carbon monoxide poisoning. The worst thing was I didn't know what it was for several months and I got sicker and sicker. I had loads of time of work and only when I crashed the damned thing into the side of a skip parked in resident's parking bay at the end of a 2 1/2 hour journey did things click.

I think it must be quite a common fault, the part that needed replaced on the exhaust was sold out for weeks and weeks...

Its currently away being fixed on insurance for the damage caused to the bodywork by the crash. No-one seems to want to buy it (tried selling it before). Its quite nice to drive but I am scared to now in case there are still fumes seeping in...
