Hi - can anyone give me any recommendations to prevent legs filling in the stable overnight? My 15.2 7yr old cob is in overnight from 6pm to 8am and his hind legs are filling at night (not fronts). He normally is out 24/7 but has been coming in at night for the last 6 weeks as his field companion is on box rest and he was pining for company, so has been coming in to be stabled next to her (they can touch). He is on matting and shavings and is quite happy to lie down (box always in a state!!). I've changed to hay from haylage to try and reduce his protein intake, he is on 3/4 scoop of power and performance and a scoop of chaff, and is ridden 4/5 times a week at the moment. The filling always reduces within an half an hour of turnout/exercise, but could anyone recommend stable boots or similar that have helped their horses? Thanks.

Stable bandages are probably the best option to help prevent legs filling, or you could give the magnetic therapy boots a try, these may also help as they increase circulation.

Hope you find something that works :)

Thanks, was hoping to avoid bandages as prefer wraps, less chance of things going wrong - I do have magnetic brushing boots so might pop those on. Just have to say that your post made me go all goose pimpley - my fantastic old boy who I lost in Sept after 12 great years was shown under the name Scrumpy Jack :)

I call my horse it for a nickname, it just seems to suit him :)

hope the boots help :D

Handy's had filled back legs due to being stabled a lot (cause of the weather). I walked him 30 mins in hand twice a day. Also cold hosed and Leg wraps. After speaking to another livery whose horse had same problem, she suggested magnetic boots. So I ordered some and they came today! will be giving them a go.
I didn't bandage as my bandaging isn't that great.

I use magnetic boots too and they seem to do the trick and really handy to help with swelling if they get a knock etc. They're wraps rather then brushing boots so a bit comfier in the stable and cover the fetlock. Think mine are made by hoofit and were about 20 quid on ebay but I expect there are better ones around.

Bandages also will help but I'm so paranoid I'll do them too tight.

Make sure the horse has enough salt in it's diet. I ran out of salt, and so did the shops, in the bad weather, and my old mares legs swelled quite badly. As soon as I started adding her usual teaspoon or so of salt per day to feed again, the swelling disappeared.

I have a pair of hoofit boots :D Handy wore them first time yesterday (building up gradually) but so far so good!

Maybe a joint supplement,-and Bandaging (is the best)- or wrapping the legs- I have some Back on Track wraps which are fab for keeping their legs tight and increases the circulation.

I've always found a liniment useful as well- Sore no more is brill stuff!- if you didn't want to fork out then witch hazel has a tightening effect and is even better when bandages are applied on top.- I was told though not to put liniments under the b.on track wraps as the 2 don't go together!

It's good that the swelling goes with exercise as well.

Good luck.
