Recommendations - vacuum cleaner for dog hair?!

So...we've finally decided to give up on the Henry as he just isn't doing his job! We have light coloured carpets (and some hard floor) and a perma-moulting black lurcher. Even after hoovering the carpet is still black.

Any recommendations? Of something currently in the shops please, not something out of production..! Looking at Dysons but not sure which one, parents have the Miele animal one but said it doesn't have much capacity and the bags are expensive.

Awaiting thoughts...
 
We've a Dyson pet one and I would recommend. Its a cylinder one not the upright, and it has a rotating brush inside the head to supposedly pick up more fur.

Its good on hard floor, carpet and removes every single hair off our shaggy red ikea rug in the kitchen :)

I think a rotating brush head is key, anything without doesn't seem to be able to pull the hairs from the carpet pile. We are on our second Dyson Animal, the first finally dying after several years of heavy use. The newer model has a smaller capacity, annoyingly, but is still infinitely better than a bagged vacuum. With two sibes in the house and a visiting dog that has to be stripped and scissored I'd be using a bag a day!

We have mostly hard floors in our new house and it's been 100x easier to keep tidy compared to our old fully carpeted house, if/when we ever manage to own I will be laying tiles throughout - just in case you'd given any consideration to replacing the carpets.
 
I have 2 dysons. 2 years ago I got a brand new DC50 animal when my old dyson died. TBH it is no where near as good as the older dyson so I managed to get a reconditioned DC04 which is heavy but brill on the dog hair
 
I have two little dysons, one for upstairs one for down! So much easier to handle than the larger versions. They work brilliantly on pet hair and can be hidden away in small spaces. In my last house I removed all the carpets downstairs and replaced with vinyl flooring (posh stuff that looked like wooden flooring but was soft on feet/paws. It made life so much easier as I only had to vacuum up the tumbleweeds of fur as they couldn't stick to anything.....hmmm...think I might go back to that again!
 
Hated the Dyson I used to have. Heavy and didn't pick up dog fur off stairs. Had to do it with a brush. Annoying!
Henry Hound was great, but died just days after warranty ran out. Even more annoying.
Miele, cat and dog model - or something like that - has been fantastic, touch wood! Four years after I bought it. Light, lots of useful brushes, picks up dog fur from stairs. Only downside, bags are expensive. But that's the one I'd recommend.
 
We have a Vax 'air pet' - fairly light, bagless, rotating brush head so fab at picking up hair and a fraction of the price of a Dyson (think we got ours for <£100 from Argos). It's also easy to take apart for filter and brush head cleaning which I find makes a bit difference.
 
I have a newer Dyson with the rotating head but a word or warning. If you have long hair it wraps around and causes the brush to block. My hair is below the waist though but I think it is worth takinging into consideration, our last dyson didn't have this is coped better.

Miele every time for us too, with three labs and several visiting ones the Miele copes brilliantly. ours is a bit battered now after 6 years use but I will definitely replace it with the same.
 
The Miele Cat and Dog is fantastic! Think I read somewhere that it's been voted the best one for removing pet hair. Read some reviews on them, I love mine and it's not too big or clumpy. My only qualm is that it's red and I didn't really want a red vac but apart from that it's great.
 
If you haven't tried it already, I'd suggest trying a turbo brush head for your henry - AFAIK all the 'pet hair' vacs use a turbo brush (rotating brush bar thingy) - as blackcob said.

Yes, I have issues with this. My vax has good access to the brush head though so only 5 minutes to attack with a pair of scissors and clear it.
