So, i am looking to buy my first pair of clippers..

I know i want cordless ones and i will only ever be clipping one horse over the winters with them. Ive looked online and there are SO many of them im flumoxed tbh!

Ideally i would like to spend around £150 but would go to £200 for the best.

Thanks all. :D

I would recommend Avalons, too. Mine are 4 years old and clip a variety of horses (6 of them) throughout the winter with no trouble at all. The clip on blades are easy to use, clippers are quiet and the battery charge lasts me for 2 full clips, but I am quick :)

I am really pleased with my Avalon clippers! They have done 3 full clips including a shetland, cob and tbx. They don't get hot and don't struggle at all with any of the coats. They are very very quiet, my youngster who was clipped for the first time let me do a full face clip and was so relaxed she fell asleep! Great value for money!

May I ask what blades you use because when I tried to clip my shetland the blades kept getting stuck (they were newly sharpend)?

I use 10W.

I also bought Moser Avalon's for my first clippers as pony was terrified of the clippers at first - they were fab for getting him used to them but he has a very, very thick coat so a bit useless for doing a full clip and the blades would struggle to complete a full clip.

My battery has also broken - no longer holds a charge and at £50 to replace I won't be doing that especially as I rarely use them now so they will be kept for doing the odd bit of beard/face clipping.

I found that not all of them fitted in my hand comfortably so I would recommend you try to see how they feel before you buy. I have fairly small hands & found that most of them were too chunky & my hand felt strained just holding them in the shop. I can't remember which other ones I tried but I ended up with Liveryman Harmony. I have seen some posts where people have felt they are not good on thick coats but I have trace clipped a cob & a very hairy pony with cushings in 1 session with them.

Avalons to me = WASTE of money!

i have never done a full clip with mine just a bid clip twice on a shetland and took the legs off a larger mare. They just wont clip anymore, bought some new blades... still wont clip. Have sought advice and have been told to buy some MORE blades to try...
Basically, they teeth of the blades move when you hold them in the air, but the second you put them to a horses hair, wont cut at all.

Sadly, as i never used them much, they were just out of warrenty when i realised there was a major problem with them!

:) I love my Avalons :) Ive fully clipped and hogged and de feathered a HAIRY traditional cob with one set of blades and 1 charge in between!! :) Their great! :) I use the Liveryman harmony blades on mine and their absolutely fine... make sure u get the wide ones tho obviously! lol Just fully clipped out my cob too and their still full of charge! :)

I had a set of Laube Lazers, was very pleased with them, fully clipped my hairy cob with ease. Whatever cordless you go with you need to fully empty the battery and recharge a few times, if you only partly run them down before recharging they won't fully function. I'm sure that there is a technical explanation to that! Also, if they are pre tensioned blades make sure that the person sharpening them is experienced with them as re tensioning is a fine art!

I, like you was a first time clipper, my partner bought me the below for Christmas and I have to say best prezzie I have had, my friends have used and couldn't believe how good they were, very light, cordless, charge in 1 hour, can use with the wire if needed.

Rechargeable Harmony Horse Clippers From Liveryman With 2 Blades - roughly £178

You will however need to buy separate blades for a shorter finish

Liveryman Wide Horse Clipper Blade - Fine 1.0 mm Cut - roughly £36

My partner bought both from ebay :D
Hope this helps

moser avlons :) love them clipped everything with them :) but blades are expencive :/ my medium/course ones dont work but i have used my fine ones on everything :) shetland, newfie, irish draft :) they are brillient :)

Hi,

In your case, budget dictates the clipper for you!

The only clippers worthy of consideration for £200 is a Moser Avalon. Criticism of them is fair, they are really a dog clipper. You will deffo need a 2nd blade or ridiculous amounts of patience!

I'd suggest taking a hit and going for a lister liberty set of clippers. You'll have to part with £300 though...
