I want something with decent vet cover and obviously third party liability. Not bothered about money back for death etc
I'd like a policy that won't cost an absolute fortune and is reasonably straight forward and easy to deal with.

I've found petplan to be good. I've had one claim which was settled quickly with no fuss. They are not the cheapest but sometimes you get what you pay for. I'd avoid healthy pets. I had a lot of problems with them

If and when I insure again it will be with PetPlan. Not the cheapest, but with the most comprehensive cover and I never had a problem claiming when I used them in the past.

I have my EBT insured with John Lewis and they have been good so far. She broke her leg a couple of months after getting her and they haven't quibbled at anything up until now. Unfortunately I only had her insured for £3k for each incident and we are near that already so bear that in mind!

I haven't claimed so who knows what the service is like but I've just insured my new Rottie x rescue with Co Op who have the same underwriters (Allianz) as PetPlan - PetPlan quoted £87 pm with £4k lifetime vet cover renewing annually while CoOp are £20 pm with £5k vet cover also renewing annually and very similar cover for complementary treatment.

OK that was with a 20% introductory discount so the renewal will rise by at least that next year but I did have a claim on house insurance with CoOp a few years back and they were easy to deal with so hopefully they will be the same with pet insurance....

It might be worth knowing that with Dogs Trust membership (£25 a year) you get the benefit of 3rd party public liability insurance for your dog – up to £1,000,000 per claim if your dog causes damage or injury to another person, their property or pets (an excess of £200 applies for the UK and £500 in the Republic of Ireland).
