Hi – can anyone recommend a reasonably priced supplement for joints please.

My mare lives out and now the cooler weather is creeping up on us I’d like to give her something to try and aid joint health – sort of like cod liver oil in humans.

Any suggestions?

Super Flex is fantastic. we bought my sport horse when he was 12 and ive only just recently retired him from artheritis at 17 and we gave him super flex for 5 years so its definatley did its job! Not the cheapest option as some people use cod liver oil. I would advise getting a liquid rather than a powder too as this gets absorbed better.
hope this helps x

Vetvits equiflex! Only £19.95 which lasts 2 months and it made my 19 year old tb go from stiff and lame on the lunge to completely sound and springy again :)

I was talking to my vet yesterday about joint supplements and he basically said the purer glucosamine, the better. Lots of supplements are mixed in with lots of rubbish, he said not to bother with cortaflex.

My dad has just picked up the supplement recommended to us from the surgery, I can tell you what its called tonight when I get to see it!

NAF Superflex definately - My pony was going intermittently lame, vets said due to athritis and wanted to bute daily, i wanted to try something first such as joint suppliment before resorting to bute and now 2 months on she is like a 4 year old again! Well worth the money! As it says on the label it is 5 star!

I did a lot of research into getting the right ratio of main ingredients and found suppleaze gold was the one that was near enough when fed at maintenance. A lot of the cheap ones u would need to feed loads to get the ratios correct to have any affect.

I get mine from pet medic online te cheapest place- £65 and should last 100 days

Superflex has also worked for mine. I notice the difference if I take them off it. Certainly helped my welsh d showing signs of athritis. Not cheap though but you can buy in bulk from some sites which saves money.

Another vote for supplease gold, we swapped to that from the equiflex & saw better results - although for anybody who gets good results from Equiflex or fancies changing to it they're bringing out some bulk buy offers soon so the price should be dropping (we stil get mail from them even though we don't buy it any more).

I used to use Superflex and that worked very well, but then I swapped to Vetvits Equiflex as it was cheaper and well it works just as well too! :)

After much research I've gone for Supplease gold - no fillers so is economical and 2 weeks in my 22 yr old is much improved. He has minor stiffness and clicking joints from time to time which have disappeared. Seems much freeer in his movement (although he has always tracked up well) and as a big moving horse feels more athletic when ridden.

i found naf joint flex brilliant! can see the difference within 3/4 days
horse wasnt lame etc... but find that when hes on it just 'smoother' to ride and he finds evething so much easier! i can tell when hes not on it within 1 week!
cheaper than most others to!

There isn't any real evidence for any of these, you certainly wouldn't see any improvement in a few days and celebrity endorsements simply mean that they've been paid to say it's good.

I use Maxaflex as a preventative not to improve as I have a youngster so I couldn't tell you about improvements but I chose it due to personal success with green lipped mussel supplements as a human which is the main ingredient, if you're looking to improve you need chondroitin in the supplement in decent quantity not glucosamine

You've found your joint supplement and mentioned it already!

Cod Liver Oil is fantastic and so much cheeper than some of the joint supplements on the market today!

I gave it to my elderly mare and also my dog, both of which are really getting on and still doing fantastic :)

Try adding some micronised linseed for a bit of 'oiling'

For glucosamine etc joint supplements Supplease Gold comes out well on its ingredients levels, lack of fillers and price :)

I was at BEVA this weekend and went to a talk by a lady from Redwings who's done a study on the effectiveness of 'nutraceuticals', mainly joint ones. Some points I thought were interesting...

some supplements they tested don't even contain ANY of the active ingredient (this was in US I think, but still)

with one study, more horses on the placebo got better than the ones on the supplement did

even if the supplements didn't do any good, they could possibly do harm at the wrong concentration

If you're interested, this is one of the papers she mentioned http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19927591
The general conclusion seemed to be: there's not enough evidence, so be sceptical!
