Hi- we are looking for a L shape or U shaped run of stables with 4 loose boxes 12 x 12, a similar sized feed and rug room and a hay store. (Permanent timber with overhang and concrete apron). We are in Bucks. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good company? We are thinking Waitrose quality and service at Tesco prices. Also, if they deal with the drawings for planning that would be a bonus. All ideas welcome. Thanks

I have used Prime Stables who have done all the drawings and plans for my L shaped run of 3 stables, tackroom, covered walkway and haybarn. I haven't had them built yet but the customer service and help with planning permission has been fantastic. I did the planning application but they read through my design and access statement for me and even spoke to the planning advisor for me to ensure the application was correct.

Try Pinnegar and Barnes in Northamptonshire. I'm not sure if they cover Bucks but their stables and sheds are top quality and they are really helpful

I had a big shed made to order, I was able to have every modification I wanted and the result is superb, different friends have kennels and stables and in all cases the products are spot on

I have recently had Kingsland to build me a new stable block and am very impressed with their work and customer care! Not sure what areas they cover but I am happy with them :)

Thanks, I'll have a look at all those. Did you guys all go and see the quality of stuff they'd already done? I'm really aware that the spec is very different from supplier to supplier. I've also looked at Vale Stables in Warwickshire on the net and they seem reasonable, but haven't spoken to them yet, and they don't have examples on show. Does anyone have any experience of them?

Just had a partition of them very good quality but three panels short on wood infil, but they delivered them next working day on way to working at Wipensade zoo, vale stables that is.

Thanks that sort of info is great. The company seem really helpful, just not sure how the whole thing with planning works as we're going to have to get plans of elevations from our chosen supplier. I'm going to ring Vale to see what they can do, as Prime seem much more expensive

For the planning application you need layout and site plans on scale 1:2500 and elevation drawings with measurements. You will also need to write a design and access statement, there are guidelines on the planning portal and then you can submit using the online application process. It's pretty easy to follow the instructions on the portal and you can find out all the information you need eg which policies apply to your application. One of my plans was incorrect and they emailed me the day after I submitted it and told me exactly what I needed to do and they give you a contact who you can ring for help.

Graham Pluess, family run business, good quality and excellent service. 6 internal stables cost me £3600 inc delivery (200 + miles) in 2010.

Can highly recommend Levade Systems. They're in East Sussex but deliver nationwide. Will build exactly what you want, to your budget. The guys that put them up are quick and polite. Or they will build and deliver and you can erect yourself. It's a small family firm that's been around for a long time. Really good customer service.

Most good stable cos will do all the planning drawings for you, including importantly the tech-y ones needed for base and drainage designs. There may well be a charge, but this is normally refunded if you go ahead with the stables and order from them.

Thanks, I currently have Vale on the case with elevations and 'brick plan' for the base as their quote came back in the right ball park. Looked at Graham Pluess, and will go to them for a quote if our application for planning permission fails. They seem to do internal stabling and very sturdy mobile stables, but the styling won't fit with what is required for pp in green belt AONB, whch is what we're up against. Fingers crossed..

Thanks for this. A couple of their gallery photos looked great for our purposes, esp with the planning. I'll make contact with them :)

Another vote for Levade. They were very helpful and the stables are beautiful as well as having stood up to a fair amount of abuse!

Impressed so far with Mark from Levade. He's quoted for exactly my preferred spec, and made some suggestions re cladding to satisfy the planners etc. He is going to do me proper elevations as per my floor plan on A3, by which I mean proper drawings of what the building will look like from all angles, rather than what Vale sent me, which was a technical cross section. For this I have sent him a cheque for £100, which will come off our eventual order. Most importantly he talked to me without being impatient or condescending. When we get the drawings we will put in our 'pre-application' for planning and find out what we've done wrong. Watch this space!

UPDATE: we went for Levade after 18 months of locking horns with Planners! Just had them built and very pleased. We wanted lots of extra ventilation so have gaps in lining of overhang, at least two if not four vents in each stable, and changes to the standard windows to allow more passage of air..they also made me a 'secret' extra top door style window for one of our horses, so he can see the other horses being ridden! We went down to Sussex to see the show unit and talk it through and it was all quoted for and then arrived on site exactly to our spec. Three guys arrived on day one, two of them were really friendly and helpful. Unfortunately there was a communication error and they didn't realise that we needed a generator, but this came with them on day 2. Very solid and impressive quality stables. Also a quick plug for our builder Roy Batting, who did our concrete, soakaways and brick base in preparation.

Just a final update. We went for Levade in the end. Went down and had a look at the show unit, picked options such as type of door hinges etc. They were really helpful as we have a horse who won't live out, but has COPD, and for him we were able to choose masses of ventilation, including under the overhang, which was something they hadn't done before, extra vents all round the walls, and a 'secret' extra window for him so he can both have the extra ventilation and see his friend across the field. We also chose smart gallows posts, and had a non standard arrangement of stables with an extra large corner box. Total cost of the stables themselves (three 12ft and one 16 x 16ft) with superb lining included and onduline roof, plus guttering all round was about £8300. Two gliches- one of the three guys who came to put it up didn't have the same happy attitude as the other two- and they turned up without a generator although we had made it clear that we were in the middle of a field. However, in fairness we didn't specify that there was no power. Only other thing is that the stables have metal brackets to hold the internal lining to the concrete base. These seem to me to be a bit sharp, so I've put gaffer tape on them to try and mitigate any risk to the horses. Had them put up over 2 days in April, and so far they have only been used for hay, as the horses are out, but no leaks! Very pleased overall. Thanks for all the help and recommendations.
