Pony had blood tests done last week which suggest he is coming out of a virus. A week later he is beginning to improve very slowly! How long does it take for a horse to recover from a virus? Is there anything supplement wise that I could be giving him to speed up his recovery? And is there anything management wise that could do to make him more comfortable and aid recovery?

Any info/help appreciated.

Recovery times can vary unfortunately - sometimes it can take months and sometimes only a few weeks. It really depends on the horse and virus. The vet usually gives me a vitamin supplement for when they are recovering. I have also found Back to Form by Horse First to be very good - although it can make them very excitable so depends a bit on your pony.

Only other treatment is rest. I would be tempted to not exercise until a blood result came back with no signs of a virus.

It took my horse 4 weeks from when she was diagnosed but she had had the virus for at least 2 weeks prior to blood testing.
I gave her a course of NAF Echinaciea(sp??!) on the vets recommendation and it really seemed to help.

When my now 4yr old had strangles over the winter I put him on a course of Global Herbs Restore and Immuplus- fabulous stuff. Makes them pick up very quickly and he got his appetite back after just a day of being on it. (He stopped eating for 4 days and his temp was 106).
