Please could people give me their experiences of horses that have had laminitis and the recovery time i.e., from discovery to when they are back in ridden work? All experiences welcome please!

hi, my mare came down with laminitis 3 years ago. i was devastated, i think it depends on how bad they have got it, my mare was on complete box rest for 2 week, i had to skip out around her. as soon as she was sound and got the ok from vets she was back in work, i then restricted her grazing and was careful with her diet, my grazing is not that good,so she is now turned out every day, i have just changed my routine and have her out at night and stabled all day with soaked hay, she is doing well but it is still a big worry.

I think most vets recommend at least 4 weeks box rest, but it probably depends on how bad it is (how early it was noticed)

The first time K had it, I had started working him lightly before he was allowed anywhere near a field!

The poor boy has been lame for five weeks before it was realised what the problem was - he has never had laminitis before and has seedy toe on that foot - he only has it on one front foot - the seedy toe and laminitis. Initially it was thought he had an abscess and after I have been politicing for a couple of weeks and nothing transpired I asked for a referral and then we found out. He has now been on box rest for two weeks, he still has a pulse and hot foot and is still uncomfortable even though he is on two bute a day! He does also have a 4 degree rotation of the pedal bone.

Like others say depends on how bad ie if pedal bone has rotated. Mine had it fairly mild; box rested for 6 weeks then turned out for 20mins a day gradually building up over a few weeks. Started riding after 6 weeks, just walk for 30 mins a day building up to an hour then introducing trot, and canter after about 6 weeks. Slowly is always the best way. My pony has been laminits free for 3 years and can quite easily hack out for 2/3 hours a day.

Hi, know what you are going through! Mine has had it 3 times since 2004, pedal rotation first time in both fronts. Had another attack earlier in the Spring. Hacking him out now, 20 mins a day, building up. Walk only at first then wee trots. had a few canter strides . Keep the horse in for 30 days at least then take it easy. You learn to live with it. As for mangement, I have tried everything.

Mine is in on box rest just now with lami.
She has gel pads on, oversoaked hay 1 bute day split between two feeds.
Long resting time is the key.
Don't be in a rush to turn out or get back on.
