Hi all, my TB horse is slowly recovering from a front pedal bone fracture, we’re 8 weeks in of box rest, my question is there anything more I can do for him to aide bone healing and recovery? He’s currently on a normal feed of traditional mix, apple chaff, spillers balancer and supplement of frankincense, Botswana and glucosamine, I didn’t know if magnetic boots/bands would help? Any advice would be grateful as just want to do everything possible to help him. Thanks

At the moment no there is nothing more you can do for him if your farrier is happy. We have just had one return to racing that broke his badly and he spent a long, long time in a shoe with 6 cleanches to hold the foot together, not letting it expand with movement so the bone couldn't move. When he came back into work he was lame, quite lame at points but he has gradually worked through it and is now completely sound. I would say he will race again but as it stands he made it to the track the other week and plonked himself at the start and refused to budge!

So in the long run your horse should be fine, don't panic if they go through lame phases so long as they don;t go hopping again, your worried get the vet to xray again etc. but of the 3 horses I have known and worked with with pedal bone fractures all were lame when brought back into work but came sound through work. So hang on in there!

Thank you for your reassurance, he’s got plastic stick on shoes at the moment and due to go back to the vet in 5 weeks for repeat x-rays and heart bar type shoes, he’s fine in himself and WB fine on it, he is an ex racer, this injury happened the day I brought him home in the lorry, he only finished racing the week before, his name is saturdaynightfever if you know of him? He’s such a beautiful boy with the most amazing temperament, just want the best for him, thank you for your advice much appreciated.

i was advised to feed Jiaogulan herb to horse with a fractured navicular bone. No idea if it helped, but he did heal in good time and strongly - back to hunting / jumping. I also used comfrey.
