I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on my poor boy.

About three weeks ago I went to the yard as usual, all was fine until I gave him his feed and he didn’t eat it. This is very unusual for him so I took his temp and was surprised when it was 40.5, he was absolutely fine in himself, was eating his hay, drinking, pooing and weeing. Anyway, once I took his temp it was as though he didnt have to pretend to be ok anymore and when i put him back in his stable he lay down and refused to get up.
Vet was on the way by this point so i just left him alone whilst waiting for the vet, by the time the vet arrived he was back up eating and looking bright and alert, typical, vet took temp, was still high, she gave him an injection bute and antibiotics and was put on a weeks course of anti-b’s.
Bute took temp down and he seemed ok, vet said maybe a virus or infection, took bloods and would run them if no improvement in the morning. He was fine in the morning, temp back down but was advised to give a week off.
Brought back into work after 8 days, all was ok seemed to be normal. After a week of slow work, took him for a hack and trotted him up a hill got to the top and he was shaking and pawing the ground, obviously this was too much for him, I got off and walked him home, was fine by the time we got back to the yard but called the vet and arranged for visit the next morning to check him over and take bloods, she also took a dropping sample.
The vet came, checked him over and found nothing but the bloods did show a slight liver inflammation, said this could be from fighting off a virus so he has been put onto Equistro Legaphyton, a liver supplement.
Droppings sample showed nothing.
Gave him another 10 days off, yesterday I walked him around the arena, well that was the plan, he was loopy! Throwing himself around the place, leaping and bucking obviously feeling better in himself. Today i took him for a walk in hand just up the lane and back but by the time we got home he was really down again and not himself.

So i guess the whole point of this post is to ask how long does it take for a horse to get over something like this?

He is out for about 4-5 hours everyday, is on a very basic diet of hifi lite, alfa-a and a vit and min sup, along with as much hay as he can eat.

He is only 5 and i feel like he should be full of energy but he never plays with the others in the field and he just seems so lethargic lately.

Any advice would be so appreciated right now, I hate seeing him like this.

last year my mare picked up a virus, she was fairly poorly , poorley enough to be tested for strangles, getting better was slow and dispite being on abs.. a week injected then 2 weeks powders and ventapaulmin, she lost weight and wasnt right, id say start to finish we were on 6-8weeks.

i think the main thing is when you think hes better give him another week, bit like us we think we are ok then push it and get poorley again.

Think how you feel with a virus or the flu, it drains you for weeks plus he's only young too which will have an impact.
Personally, I'd turn him away for at least another month and even then take him very slowly, no cantering or long trotting spells for at least another month. If you don't give him enough time to recover he'll come down with it again through weakness so it's not worth risking IMHO; time is the best gift you can give him. I'd also add Kossolian to his diet, it's a great pick-me-up for them at times like these.
