Does anyone know approximately how long it takes from being diagnosed with an acute injury to the root of the supensory ligament in the hind leg to getting back into normal work?
Hi my horse did his curb ligament and had about 3 4 months off .I think we started walking at 12 weeks for a month then trot for a month etc.Not sure how relevant curb is to suspensory .Sorry
So far mine has been on box rest for 5 weeks. He has a second scan due on 22nd and if all is well he can start walking in-hand (I have a feeling it may be more leaping vertically than walking)
Just trying to work out how long it will be til we can get back to normal!
Sorry if this reply is negative but picture a girl sat at her keyboard with a gun to her temple.
2 months Box Rest
2 months walk in hand twice a day
2 months ridden work in walk bucked off twice
Started trot work on Friday - lamer than when we started all this back in August.
Got off the Horse an hour ago !
My Advice I was offered injenctions of something or other and radiowave therapy ? which I didnt go for as he was so marginally lame Take everything offered.
My Next Step ring the Vet in the morning and start looking for someone that wants a Companion Horse.
basically you're talking about PSD which my horse had in his right hind 6yrs ago - he was diagnosed late august, back doing prelim in march, sponsored rides in april and never looked back. he had 3 sessions of shockwave therapy and box rest followed by controlled exercise.
forgot to say, PSD doesn't get better with just rest, be it box or field rest. you need the shockwave therapy or if the injury is too severe for that, then de-nerving is an option.
I totally agree with Star as above. I also had a 5 year old with PSD in both hinds, after 3 months box rest, 6 sessions of shock wave and 2 months controlled walking he was about 90% sound. Some Hyaluronic acid and Cortisone in to his TMT joints helped for the next few weeks at which point he was sound. Unfortunately he then tore the meniscul cartilage in his stifle and after two lots of surgery it was irrepairable and we had to have him pts in October.
Good luck and if at any point he/she takes a worst step than the day before go back a stage, any rushing now will only come back to haunt you.
I forgot to say that Grace had four lots of shockwave treatment and some injections straight into the ligament itself (sorry, I can't remember the name of these).
To answer the thread I would say 6 months was a reasonable amount of time - but it is dependant upon the severity.
My horse (as some of you know) had 4 shockwave treatments and 3 months solid box rest followed by walking in hand - building up to restricted turn out in a small paddock and eventually me riding... not an easy task
Not wishing to jinx things we've not looked back - it's been nearly a year since my vet signed him off
But my horse was never lame from it - he had PSD in both hinds
More recently I took his back shoes off - being a TBxID he has poor feet and the reason for taking them off was because he threw a shoe and took most his hoof away with it - after 10 weeks being without shoes on his back his feet have never looked better (combined with Farriers Formula) and his movement has improved ten fold - we are able to still hack out and his feet are none the worse for wear... and as he needed sedating for the farrier to shoe his back he now doesn't have to be sedated every 6 weeks!
it depends on the severity of the injury. mine has only mild to moderate damge and is going to have approx 7 weeks of 20-40 mins walking exercise and turnout in a pen (from being diagnosed). shes had 3 shockwave sessions and injections into the ligaments themselves.
