My horse has had choke a couple of times in the last couple of days. It resolves itself very quickly - I am pretty sure it's from bolting the long grass she is allowed to eat whilst I am tacking her up, and once I drag her off that she is absolutely fine (I've not been sure up until now that it was choke, as she recovered so quickly and hasn't been even slightly bothered once I've stopped her eating and it's gone). She's fine in the field picking at the sparse grazing she has. Today it was a bit worse and I quickly stuck her back in her field and watched her for ages... nothing exciting happened, she just grazed happily the whole time.
Is it possible that there is something lodged in her throat that doesn't bother her until she starts eating lots of grass very quickly? I would have thought choke would carry on until whatever it was in there was moved?
And don't worry, I'm calling the vet!

My oldie had a spate of choking when I first gave her a feed at night. Had the vet said she was fine etc... any how when the dentist next came out (he does her every 6 months) I mentioned it to him and he said he couldnt see any reason why but would try to rasp her teeth slightly differently and low and behold she hasnt choked since (touch wood!)

I do also really wet her feeds and put her hay in 2 haynets so she cant grab big chunks.

well if you think it is the lon grass dont allow her to eat it. get her teeth and throat checked give her sloppy foods and go from there!

It's very doubtful there will be anything obstructing her now. Often with choke, the oesophagus becomes scratched or irritated and so for a few days afterwards, they will still choke a little. Once the irritation has gone down, she should be fine.

Thanks for all the replies guys

She's being 'scoped this afternoon just to be on the safe side. If I left it, it would be sod's law that she'd get worse but I can guarantee there will be nothing to see now I've decided to spend the money! Never mind, that's what my vet is there for!
