Red mare - is temper/sensitivity a myth?

I have 2 of what people would say to never get - chestnut shetland mares.

They are the sweetest, kindest, most delightful ponies you could ever wish to meet!

Of the chestnuts at work the geldings are absolute wimps. The mares are as tough as old boots. The boys are more amenable to ride. The girls can be quite opinionated but always safe.

I have a very ginger strawberry roan mare. She is a complete and utter teddy bear, the sweetest temperament ever.
I wonder if Ginger in Black Beauty influenced the stereotype of chestnut mares.
