Red Worm In Frozen Water Trough

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help

Just now, I was smashing the 4" ice from my horses water trough, to find the ice & water underneath riddled with redworms (or bloodworms)

OH & I have emptied trough out, but what are they and how did they get into the frozen trough? (especially in this freezing conditions!). I could understand if we were talking spring/summertime but not now

Horse is wormed regularly, and apart from this overly frozen time, field is poo-picked daily. His droppings are all normal, and having a poke through a fresh pile, nothing is untoward.

So, any idea what they are and how they got there and although he'll be wormed this month, do I need to do anything different......

Don't worry, they're just mosquito larvae!

ETA They probably sink to the bottom of the trough while it is frozen, but they'll hatch into pesky mozzies come the warmer weather.

ETA............just reading on internet- people advise goldfish in troughs to eat them

Too late for these peskys as have I have already dumped them into a ditch
