Hi there, I've been advised to post this in here in case anyone has any ideas :-)

I've got a 3.5 ton horsebox where the horse travels backwards with her head in the grooms area. Has anyone ever seen any gizmo that helps reduce the mess made by the horse eating hay? I really love my horsebox but the mess is a nuisance and with so many out there on the market I was hoping someone might have come up with an innovative idea?? Thanks :D

You could try something like a hay bag (eg http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Shires-De...vr_id=&cguid=98eae9a21260a0aad2427d62fff61bfa) but I think it will still make a mess because it is the bits that get pulled out or fall out of the horses mouth that make the mess.

I bought that with the intention of reducing the mess in my 3.5t horsebox, and it was awful - gave up on it after two goes! First of all the cord (which is like a shoelace) snapped, then my horse got so angry with it that he was stamping in the box! I think he couldn't really get anything out of it, and when he tried, the bag was just moving as he was pulling it.

I've gone back to using a normal small holed hayned (which I steam in a dustbin to reduce dust). Yes I do get hay everywhere, but keep a dustpan and brush in the back so can keep on top of it. The tack is in tack lockers so doesn't get covered, and the flooring is vinyl, not carpet, so easy to sweep.

Am interested to hear any other ideas. I've toyed with the idea of giving him a bucket of chaff instead, but he'd prob try to bolt it and choke or something, and not sure how long it would last either.

How about a roller blind fitted so that it unrolls from infront of the horse and slopes slightly upwards towards hooks at the back of the lorry.

All the loose hay would be caught on top of it or fall back towards the horse and you could unhook it and let it roll up if you want to sit in the back at a show or something....

I gave up trying as couldn't find anything that helped
So now i just store everything in plastic containers with lids so it doesn't get covered :D

Hi, I have a 3.5 ton lorry that I bought from Alexanders near Harrogate. This is rear facing with the horses head over the grooms area. Alexanders make a hay catcher, that they call a 'sail', which is basically a sheet of canvas that stretches across the widith of the lorry, just the otherside of the front partition, and it catches all the dropped hay and stops the hay falling into the grooms area. When the 'sail' is fitted it looks a bit like a hammock, (best way I can describe it!). The 'sail' simply clips onto hooks on the inside of the lorry so you can quickly detach it and shake off the caught hay. I don't know if Alexanders would sell just a 'sail' but it might be worth a phonecall.
Hope this helps!

hi, i have had a similar problem for the last 3 years. after seeing a box with a "hay catcher" at a show i managed to make my own using a £5 tarpaulin and a packet of sticky backed velcro---sorry if this sounds like something from blue Peter!!!LOL
It works but not 100% of the hay is caught. the horses took a while to get used to it to. good luck

I found hay bags didn't work. I now use haylege nets which with my horses hardly drop anything. ou could try a roller blind at an angle rather than a tarp.

would suggest haynets with tiny holes - I bought some many years ago and never seen them since - like fishermans nets - but double. YOu could try doubling up haylage nets (one inside the other).
