Redundancy - what to do with broodmare and yearling ? (also in breeding)

I'm just about to be made redundant and i'm worried i wont find another job quickly that will cover all my bills/outgoings. but i have two old horses and a broodmare and her yearling. Question is what do you think the possibility is of putting them on loan, the broodmare (field injury means she cant be broken in and ridden) and her yearling, they are both PRE's (pure andalusian) i know its quite a specialist breed but I dont know what else to do, really dont want to relinquish ownership but happy to consider loaning long term. the two oldies couldnt be loaned/sold and PTS would never be an option.

thankfully have my own land but the additional costs of bedding/feed will be too much for them all - obviously will try and get any form of work ASAP but just trying to make sure i do the best for them all

any suggestions anyone?
 
Sorry to hear about your position. Do you have any spare land/stables that you could rent out to try and generate income towards their keep?
 
I'm not an expert on pre's, but if it was permanent loan so the loaner would have yearling to ride for as long as they wanted, & mare to breed from, it sounds perfectly possible. It would just have to be a good contract, nobodys going to take on a yearling, keep it for years, break & school etc with the risk of owner demanding return once its older.
 
Is the mare graded? If yes, a few people may want a nice mare to get a few foals out of.

The yearling - someone we knew took a yearling as company for their horse, with the yearling owner footing vets and hardfeed, in exchange for their horses company - do you know any 1 horse people?
 
Would the broodmare be out on possible loan to be used as a broodmare, or would you want her to just be used as a companion? And also, how far radius wise would you be looking at?

Not that I'm advertising, or responding to an advert...or similar! :p :)
 
Firstly don't panic, I was made redundant last year and got another job very quickly, if you are bright and willing there are definitely jobs out there x

I second the idea of maybe renting out some land to cover the costs, so many yards restrict grazing at this time of year you may pick up a couple of 24/7 turnout people
 
If it as me, I'd PTS the oldies (since you say loan/sell is not an option...)
I'd either send the yearling to grass livery with other youngsters to occupy it, or advertise your own land for yearlings/youngsters to winter out on - shock horror, many PREs are perfectly capable of wintering out, low cost. That or sell it.
Well, if the mare is graded and you believe she is worthy of having foals for the 'mass market', not just one you're going to keep, trying loaning her out. But as the owner of a stud, I'd still be looking objectively at whether she is breeding quality - if she isn't, either sale or PTS.

Now, I'm going to be the big meanie here - being made redundant isn't the time for sentimentality. None of this 'pts not an option' etc, right now you need to do what is best for these horses, and PTS is not a bad way to go.
 
Firstly thank you all for your replies.

PTS is definatly NOT an option for any of them, especially the older ones. Id sooner starve than do this, they have enough hayledge put aside for the winter so i'd not have to pay out anything in that respect.

The PRE's are both purebred and the mare is graded, and did very well at the breed show when she was a 2 year old before her accident, I'd already checked out other peoples less rosy specticled view before i bred from her, she's also very well bred apparently.

I wouldn't want her to go too far away from me (north shrops/chesire border)so that will limit things a little i surpose, but i'm really worried about their care, I will try the BAPSH website/facebook forum to see what potential there is too,

I've been busy all day applying for jobs and speaking to agencies so hopefully something might come up, I've got my Head office meeting tomorrow so hopefully i've got a months notice plus holiday owing to get things sorted one way or the other. this is all sooooooo stressfull !!!!!
