Redwings have taken in 26 horses...

Absolutely vile, disgusting, wrong.. so many words to describe it. I don't know when or if people will ever stop being cruel, vicious monsters to horses - or animals in general - but seeing stories like this still continue to shock me.

Terrible. :(

How awful...the amount people are harking on about KS and LC atm, when in fact, it is this type of issue that surely needs addressing :(

sorry to be a bit dim- I dont always understand the shorthand! I know OH, Yo and a few others, Whats HHO, KS and LC please? And yes- its terrible that horses should get as far as this before anythings done about them.

There was a piece on the local news about them as they are in Norfolk - The CEO was basically saying they can't go on at the rate these cases are happening, especially as they are still re-habbing the Spindles horses.

Harsh as it is, but I do feel that sometimes, euthanasia needs to happen more than it does. There is a holding paddock down the road from me that is used for rescue horses and it is trashed from having far too many horses on it over the last couple of years and the amount of hay and feed they are getting through is phenomenal and I do feel, they could be euthanising horses in a humane way and putting money into the prevention of these cases.

No idea on ks or lc! Maybe we could do a Hho- horse and hound online thing to raise money for them? Maybe we all donate a pound or something there's thousands of members we could do it coordinated at same time?

Forgot to say - the CEO was asked how much this latest rescue will be cost, to which she said she hadn't even started to work it out, but she had done a quick tot-up for the time that todays session had cost and she said in the region of £2000. That is for ONLY naming, id'ing, taking bloods (which is done in house), and general check over of each horse. It doesn't take into account all the 'recovery' costs from Wales and the on-going care.

Mind boggles.

There is more information on the Redwings site, and their facebook page. It says that Redwings were working with the local trading standards, and some other local horse charities.

Seems so sad that animals have to get to such a desperate state before they can be removed.

There is interest on their pages in donating to help with the costs, they make it easy for people to donate by texting, and donating a small amount simply.

Also saw this on the local news. I've long been a supporter of Redwings, who used to have a centre quite local to me. My guess is the delay over rescuing these horses was due to efforts to establish ownership and also prove their suffering in the eyes of the law, not to mention the council involved hoping it wouldn't have to do anything at all if "someone else" stepped in first.
Much as I would love to see these poor animals recovering with good food and TLC, I also agree that we are reaching a point at which charities will have to opt for PTS more frequently than to date, and not prolong the life of the worst cases. They also need to campaign for some means of restricting breeding.

exactly what i was about to say

imo euthanasia needs to be brought forward a bit.... yes there wil be an outcry but i personally believe this is the only way forward in the current climate. sad but true.

I, too, agree with this. The centers are so full, and with more coming in all the time, something has to give, and at least the poor ponies will be out of their misery, and that's the important thing to remember.

Completely agree. Perhaps if we had more abattoirs the horses wouldn't be allowed to get into this state

When I was young many many moons ago, in Cheshire there was a horse rescue centre. In those days, there was still neglect and cruelty but not anywhere near the scale of the problem there is these days. This centre was self funded and could not keep all the ponies/horses they rescued...They would give the worse cases, at least two weeks of deep beds, good feed and loving attention, and then put to sleep humanely. Their reasoning was, that the ponies/horses involved would reason (rightly or wrongly) that not all humans were b*****ds. It used to make me feel, at the same time, both so sad and also glad that these animals were not going to suffer anymore.

Well done to Redwings. I will be donating. They are a responsible, deserving cause who are actually doing some good unlike other so called charity's which seek to assist those convicted of animal cruelty.

Good news they have been rescued :)

Isn't the influx of abandoned or poorly cared for horses/ponies and donkeys a direct reflection of the poor state of economy in this country and the triple dip recession?

Good horses simply don't sell, horses are abandoned, there is no money to buy hay (which is vastly expensive and still going up!), everything is getting more expensive, but there is no money to meet the expense...which will it end.................???
